Chapter 71

After they had returned to the villa, Abigail kept thinking about the drug.
She could not figure out how Chanse had ended up getting involved with her father’s case.
The two families were never involved in a feud, so where did Chanse get those prohibited ingredients from? Was he involved in the development of those drugs?
Or was the entire Gomez family involved?
She even went as far as wondering whether Derrick’s kindness was actually to make up for something else.
But she immediately shut that thought down.
She could feel that Derrick’s kindness toward her was genuine. She should not be second–guessing him.
She sat alone in a daze until evening fell. It was only when she heard Peter greeting Eric in the foyer that she realized Eric had returned.
“How did her medical examination go? Is everything fine?” Eric asked Peter.
Peter nodded and said, “Everything’s fine.”
“Where is she?”
“Mrs. Gomez is sitting over there.” Peter pointed in her direction.
Eric looked over and all he could see was Abigail’s silhouette. It might have been the fading light of the evening but from where he was standing, and with her back toward him, she looked lonely.
She had also lost a lot of weight recently, and this broke his heart.
Eric walked toward her, “Why are you sitting here?”
Abigail responded, “Isn’t it the same anywhere? I can’t see anything anyway.”
“You’d usually be in the room listening to an audiobook at this hour.” Eric sat down next to her. He read her expression before continuing, “Are you feeling down? Was there something wrong with the medical examination?”
Abigail shook her head and said, “No.”
Even though she did not say much, her demeanor had become gentler and this was enough to surprise Eric.
Every other day, she would always come off as a little prickly.
Even though he did not know what caused the change, this was a good sign.
He took the chance to ask, “Would you want to go on a trip to the countryside this weekend? I have a friend who owns a farm on the outskirts. The scenery is beautiful and the air is great.
I’m sure you’ll like it.”
Before this, Abigail would surely turn him down. But now, after a moment of deliberation, she agreed, “Okay.”
Feeling rather surprised, Eric raised his eyebrows. Then, he bent over and said, “The wind’s too strong, I’ll carry you back inside.”
He bent down and scooped her up into his arms. She did not resist and simply stayed in his embrace silently.
The air in his embrace was filled with her calming scent. Eric immediately felt like he had regained something he had lost, and he could not help but feel overwhelmed.
Abigail was desperate to have her eyes treated.
She wanted to uncover the truth of her father’s fate, but due to her impaired vision, it was difficult to get around. It was practically impossible for her to investigate. Only when she regained her eyesight would she be able to properly investigate what had happened to her father.
She clutched Eric’s shirt in her hand and said, “Are there any updates on the corneal transplant?”
Eric was stunned for a moment. This was the very first time she asked about the corneal transplant.
Although she could no longer see, she had always acted nonchalant about everything, and this included the corneal transplant.
Eric immediately answered, “No updates yet. But I believe we’ll hear something soon. Don’t worry, I won’t let you lose your eyesight completely.” Abigail lowered her head. All of a sudden, she said, “I’m… scared.”
Eric was startled.
“I don’t like going out because I can’t see. I’m scared. I’m scared that I’ll live in darkness forever.
I don’t want to become blind…”
“You won’t become blind.” Eric cut her off with a firm volce. He assumed that she had been affected by what Sally had said during the family dinner. “Don’t worry. No matter what the price is, I’m going to make sure that you get your eyesight back.”

“Okay.” Abigail felt reassured.
