little fool? Stop listening to what he says and start paying attention to what he’s actually doing. He keeps telling you he’s doing it for your own good… It seems that you did believe him at some point. Are you really that naive?”
At that moment, I felt as if everything had finally clicked into place.
I grabbed an iced coke near me and splashed it straight into Joziah’s face. “I splashed coke on you because I want to help you cool off. Do you like this way of ‘helping‘?”
Joziah stood there, drenched, as everyone stared at him. He grumbled, frustrated, “You don’t understand my painstaking efforts, but I can’t just watch you go down the wrong path. Come on, we’re going to the police station right now to apologize to Jasmine. You—”
I cut him off and said sharply, “You must be bored out of your mind to show up here. News flash: you’re not that important. Regardless, I might as well give you something to do!”
Then, I clicked on Joziah’s half–brother’s Snapchat before spilling all the beans. I told him how Joziah had arranged for their father’s mistress and used her influence to convince him to give him a bigger share of the family business.
Joziah’s eyes went wide with disbelief, but it was too late to stop me. Suddenly, he had no time to argue with me as he dashed out in a panic.
Lucas looked at me, stunned. “Well, look at you, finally fighting back. You’re not going to make up with him in a few days, are you?”
I shook my head. “No. I broke up with him yesterday.”
His eyes lit up
for a second when he heard my statement. It was so quick that I couldn’t help but wonder whether I was just imagining things.
As for Jasmine’s prison sentence, it was set in stone. There was no going back from it. My aunt, Rebecca Morton, and uncle, Henry Morton, were so furious that they spoke behind my back to family and friends. Sadly, for them, no one came to lecture me or smooth things over this time. They were preoccupied with something else as everyone’s interests were now tangled up in this mess.
The family group chat exploded with arguments.
‘Mom has 300,000 in savings, enough for the surgery. Yet, your daughter stole the money to buy a car. Why should we all chip in now?”
‘Exactly. The money was stolen by your child. So, it’s only right for your family to cover all of the expenses.‘
‘My daughter’s going to jail, and you still expect me to fork out 300,000? Do you even have a shred of empathy?‘
‘You didn’t raise your daughter right. That’s on you. Are you really going to blame everyone else for your problems?‘

Chapter 5 Why Are You So Vicious?
‘That’s right. If you don’t come up with the money in five days, don’t blame us for reporting you to your workplace!‘
Since my grandmother’s pension was approximately 20,000 a month, her children all wanted her to stay alive. Rebecca and Henry, both working in government jobs, cared deeply about their reputations. They couldn’t afford not to pay, but they also resented having to do so. Therefore, they showed up at my rented apartment, demanding answers.
