Chapter 8 The Perfect Wedding Gift
This is the first time I’ve ever witnessed Joziah looking so utterly defeated in my two
lifetimes.
However, I didn’t feel the least bit sorry for him. In fact, I felt deeply satisfied with how things had turned out.
“I’ve only betrayed you once, and you’re already crumbling? What about all those years when you forced me to apologize to the real culprits? What about the times you’ve compensated them and made me thank you for it? Did you ever stop to think about how humiliated and disgusted I felt?”
His face twisted with guilt. “Jasmine deceived me. She tricked me into thinking you were the one at fault.”
I scoffed. “No, Joziah. The problem lies in your lack of trust in me. You’ve never trusted me even once. You’ve never bothered to consider how I felt. Stop making me sick. If you keep this up, I won’t hesitate to add more fuel to your bonfire there.”
Then, I didn’t hesitate to turn on my heel and walk away with Lucas by my side.
Lucas, who was in an unusually good mood, hummed all the way. He even insisted on treating me to dinner. Then, he dragged me to the mall, claiming he needed to pick out gifts for his younger sister. In the end, every piece of clothing, every bag, and every bit of jewelry he chose ended up being shoved into my arms.
“You’ve made a lot of progress lately, little coward,” he teased with a grin. “Congrats on learning how to ditch that scumbag!”
For the next couple of weeks, Joziah never showed his face before me. I wasn’t too sure whether he had finally come to his senses or was just too scared of retaliation. Still, I was glad that I’d finally gotten some peace for a long, long while.
Unfortunately, things weren’t going smoothly when it came to reclaiming my parents‘ inheritance. Rebecca constantly threw tantrums and refused to comply with the court’s ruling. Meanwhile, Henry claimed he couldn’t do anything to stop her, as all the money and property were in her name. The truth was, he didn’t want to give anything back either.
Forget about returning my rightful inheritance, they even dragged their feet over my grandmother’s surgery expenses.
Jasmine’s car was sold for 200,000, but they still owed another 100,000, which was just over half a year’s salary to them. Yet, they delayed the payment for ages.
The stress was too much for my grandmother. So, she didn’t survive for long, even after receiving the surgery.
