Chapter 17
In the midst of great fear, despair, and confusion, Ruben managed to pull back a trace of reason.
Instinctively, he said, “No. She didn’t call me.””
No matter what, he and Grace had been siblings for more than twenty years.
Maybe they had grown apart, and maybe she held grudges.
Still, she ought to inform him before the ten–year closed study.
So, of course, she didn’t go.
John said firmly, “That’s not possible.
“That day in the private room, I saw her call your number when I got up.
“It was… last Saturday at noon.”
Ruben subconsciously wanted to deny it again.
Yet, in the next second, something clicked in his mind.
Last Saturday at noon?
It was about five in the morning in Northbeech.
That day, at five in the morning, he had just finished taking Lacey to see the aurora.

She asked him to take a lot of photos and was so excited that she wouldn’t go back to the hotel; they spent a lot of time enjoying the view.
On the way back, she took his phone, saying she wanted to take a look at those photos.
She walked while checking them; in an instant, she was left behind.
He stopped in his tracks and turned around, only to see her holding the phone to her ear.
Back then, he figured she was listening to the video.
A bit impatient, he called out to her, “Put the phone away; hurry up.”
Recalling this, he had a bad feeling, which overwhelmed him in an instant.
So, was Lacey really checking out the photos and the videos?
At some point, John had already hung up the phone.
The bedroom door, which he had closed, was suddenly flung
open.
He looked up at once, and for the first time, he hoped so much that it was Grace who had come back.
Grace used to come home from school late at night countless times.
It didn’t matter if she ignored him, pulled a long face, or got into trouble.

He could forgive her for wanting to get rid of Lacey.

He could forgive her for pushing Lacey down the stairs.
All of a sudden, he found none of this mattered.
None of this mattered as long as Grace came back.
Yet in the next second, it was Mason who rushed in with a chill all over his body and bloodshot eyes.
His head and body were covered in snow.
After landing in Bluewell, Mason took a cab and left without coming back together with Ruben and Lacey.
Ruben didn’t know where he had been to.
Mason, who had always been gentle and calm, had a sullen face and didn’t even say hello to Ruben.
He hurried straight into the cloakroom and then into the bathroom.
Then he walked out and entered the other bedrooms and the study.
Ruben knew what he was looking for.
Looking at him, Ruben sat on the bed and didn’t even have the strength to stand up.
Mason quickly looked everywhere both upstairs and downstairs and then went back to Grace’s bedroom.
He walked up to Ruben with a ghastly pale face.
