I nodded in response. “Yeah, it’s me. What’s the problem?”
I grabbed a pack of pads and headed to the checkout, but Serena came charging at me like a shrew. She yanked my hair from behind and screamed, “You shameless bitch! You’ve ruined my family! You should just die!”
I pulled her hand off my hair, and a few strands got caught in her grip. I ran my fingers through my hair to fix it before slapping her hard.
“If anyone’s wrecking families, it’s you! And if anyone deserves to die, it’s you! Do you actually believe I won’t hit you just because you’re pregnant? Look at the cameras above you. This is self–defense!” I snapped.
Her bloodshot eyes widened with rage, and her face twisted into a horrible snarl. She clutched her cheek and hissed through gritted teeth, “You dirty bitch… I swear, I’ll kill you!”
A chill ran through me, and I instinctively stepped back.
Suddenly, Serena grabbed a bottle and splashed whatever was inside at me. I didn’t react fast enough, but luckily, someone passing by threw their jacket over my head to block it.
I froze up in fear. What if it was some kind of harmful liquid? I pulled the jacket off and checked. I sighed in relief when I realized it wasn’t acid but water.
A few security guards rushed over and pinned Serena to the ground. She held her belly, screaming non–stop.
After apologizing to the passerby, I quickly called the police. Once I finished giving my statement and was leaving the station, I ran into Owen again. He looked drained as if he’d aged years in a single night.
Serena lost it, while Owen was completely shattered. Was this what real love looked like? Maybe I just hadn’t understood love after all.
“I’m sorry, Ellie!” Owen said, his eyes teary as he looked at me.
Sorry? If apologies actually fixed things, we wouldn’t need the police.
But I was done with both of them, so I said, “It’s fine. I hope you two find all the happiness in the world. May you grow old together! And may we never cross paths again!”
With that, I turned and got into my Bentley, driving off and leaving him in the dust.
Honestly, after that run–in with Serena, all the anger I’d been holding onto evaporated. The love I once had for Owen and the stubbornness to hold on were completely gone.
My past relationship and everything I went through had taught me a lot. I knew there was no point in wasting more time on those who didn’t matter anymore.
