I still had so much ahead of me, didn’t I? My good days were just getting started.
I took some time off and went on a trip with Mom. When I got back, I jumped straight into work and ended up with a promotion and a raise.
Mom and Dad set me up on a few blind dates, but I politely turned them all down.
All I wanted was to make a good living, look after Mom and Dad, and enjoy life by drinking, chatting, and shopping with a few close friends. That was more than enough for me.
I had no intention of diving into marriage again–at least, not for now.
But I didn’t expect Owen to keep haunting me like a ghost that wouldn’t move on. I ran into him again when I went for a checkup a year later.
I felt nothing for him—no love or hate. He was just a stranger to me, someone I hoped I’d never see again.
Owen stopped me. “Could you… lend me some money, Ellie?”
I turned around, annoyed. “And why the hell would I do that?”
It turned out he hadn’t been able to land a decent job since he got fired. Because of that, Serena’s mother began looking down on him, mocking him for being broke and unable to have kids.
Owen took it all, even after Serena gave birth. He cared for the baby like his own.
Then one day, the baby’s real father showed up. Owen wasn’t home, and the man got into a heated argument with Mildred.
That was when she found out the grandson she’d been doting on wasn’t Owen’s. The shock hit her like a ton of bricks, and she had a heart attack right there.
Serena didn’t spare Mildred a glance. She took the baby and left with the man.
When Owen came home, he found Mildred on the floor. He immediately called 911 and had her rushed to the hospital.
He had always kept the fact that he couldn’t have kids from Mildred, worried it would crush her. And Mildred had always believed my Instagram post was just a vicious lie.
