After a few seconds, Antonio texted me, “You’re full of lies, Grace. You’d never bear to get an abortion. It’s our baby!”
“Grace, if you curse my dad again, I’ll leave you for good.”
I didn’t even bother to text back to this nitwit. I simply sent him a few photos of Stone Town ruined by the floodwater.
He didn’t reply to me or call me after that.
A few hours later, he called me.
After thinking about it for a while, I picked up.
Though it had only been a few hours, he sounded much weaker and desperate. He questioned me, “Grace, you went back town that night, right? Why did you take my parents to evacuate?”
I was shocked. How could he blame me for Vernon’s death?
I said coldly, “Antonio, you’re fucking stupid. You told them there wouldn’t be a flood, right? You specifically told them not to believe a word I said. Remember what you said to me? You said ‘Don’t bother worrying about my parents‘.
“And go ask Jodie what happened exactly. They locked me out. How the fuck was I supposed to take them away? Oh, and in case you don’t know, Jodie hit me with a shoe. I got so dizzy that I almost died there.
“Antonio, don’t you try to pin Vernon’s death on me. You are the reason why he’s dead.”

With that, I hung up the phone.
He texted me to apologize, “I’m sorry, Grace. I just couldn’t quite accept the fact that my dad’s dead.”
“Grace, tell me you didn’t get an abortion. You couldn’t bear to see me losing my dad and my baby the same day, would you?”
I took a photo of the surgery form and sent it to him.
“Antonio, you hooked up with Yvonne. Why would I give birth to your baby? I’m not stupid.” I texted him.
After quite a long time, he replied, “It’s fine, Grace. We can always have another baby.”
“It’s Dad’s funeral tomorrow. Could you come here and see him off one last time?”
I thought about it and agreed to attend Vernon’s funeral anyway.
When I arrived, I saw Yvonne.
At the sight of me, she cursed me, her voice grating, “Grace, Vernon is dead all because of you. You actually dare to show up here? You’re so shameless. Are you here to disgust him?”
I slapped her cheek hard.
“I can’t believe how stupid you are, Yvonne. I told you a million times there’d be a flood. But you and Antonio never believed me.
“You were so busy taking a bath and enjoying fondue together on your trip, weren’t you?”
Everyone looked at Yvonne with disgust in their eyes.
Seeing this, she turned to Antonio for help. “Antonio, did you see that? This shrew slapped me! Make things right for me!”
To her surprise, Antonio slapped her even harder.
“Served you right. If it weren’t for you, I would’ve come back with Grace to pick up my dad and my mom, and my dad wouldn’t have died.”
Caught off guard, Yvonne looked at him with great disbelief.
Antonio no longer paid her any attention. He slumped to the floor in front of Vernon’s collin, falling silent.
After the funeral, everyone left, and he was still there, motionless.
Yvonne wanted to help him up, but he pushed her to the floor.
“Get lost! I’ll kill you if I ever see you again!
“You bitch! My dad’s dead because of you!”
Terrified. Yvonne ran away without looking back, her face ghastly pale.
Who would have known? This time, the duo actually ended up like this.
I was even more surprised to hear Antonio blame Yvonne for Vernon’s
death.
It seemed the tendency of shifting blame to others was engraved in hist
nature.
I was about to leave when he called out to me from behind.
“Grace, don’t leave me. Come back. We’ll act as if nothing ever happened,
OK?
“I won’t see Yvonne ever again. From now on, you’re the only one I love. Let’s get married next month as planned, OK?
“In fact, we can even get married tomorrow if you want.”
