Chapter 59
As Victor’s words hung in the air, the hospital room remained silent, with no response from Claire.
Ethan hesitated at the door, unsure whether to enter when Victor’s voice reached his ears again.
“Your body is yours, you should cherish it’s
Claire had stayed silent before, but this time she replied, her voice soft yet cold. “Nathan insists on hitting me. What good is cherishing my body?”
Victor was taken aback by her response. After a moment’s thought, he said, “If he hits you, you can dodge. Standing still only gets you hurt”
Claire stared blankly at him, making Victor uncomfortable.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
Claire remained silent
It seemed Victor was concemed for her. In reality, he wasn’t. It’s like being sick–those who truly care take you to the doctor, get your medicine, and tend to you, not just tell you to drink plenty of fluids.
She could have ignored him, but Victor frowned, looking at her with an expression that said he was concerned, while she was ungrateful.
Claire’s voice was weak. “How do you know I just stood there and let him hit me? It’s hard for me to even walk fast. How am I supposed to dodge?”
Her retort made Victor feel challenged, even though Claire was merely stating facts.
Victor, being a privileged heir, disliked being contradicted.
Annoyed, he blurted out, “Mr. Linwood is easygoing. If you hadn’t upset him, why would he hit you? You should look for the reason in yourself, not blame others for everything
Being told she had to find the reason within herself for being beaten made Claire’s heart ache.
As someone powerless, her resistance was like throwing eggs at a stone.
She was no heiress, just a woman at the bottom of the heap, oppressed and tamed.
Though she was the one being hurt, she was the one being scolded.
She felt exhausted in an instant, unwilling to engage in any more meaningless arguments. “Get out,” she said coldly.
Victor looked utterly shocked. “What did you say?‘:
“I said get out” Claire’s voice was still weak from illness, but her attitude was firm.
Victor had never been so rudely dismissed. Anger flashed across his face. “You really don’t know what’s good for you”
With that, he turned to leave
But after just a couple of steps, he felt unsatisfied and turned back. “Your actions deserve your suffering.”
The words were like a knife, cutting through Claire’s heart!!
Her face went pale, feeling as though every drop of blood in her body had frozen.
She bit her lower lip so hard that it bled, the metallic taste spreading in her mouth, yet she was oblivious.K
She knew that in this world, no one truly understood her pain, no one stood by her side, no one sought justice for her?!
In others‘ eyes, her suffering was self–inflicted, her own fault
But why should it be?
Outside the hospital room, Victor ran into Ethan With Imitation, he said, “I’d advise you not to go in. She’s in a foul mood, you’ll only get yelled at ”
Ethan peered through the glass in the door, focusing on Claire’s frail, bruised body inside the room.
“How is she doing?” he asked.
Victor scoffed. “She had the energy to argue with me, her health must be fine.”2
“By the way, why did your father hit her? Honestly, he was pretty rough.
Ethan didn’t answer, just continued gazing of Claire, feeling an intense ache in his heart.
Seeing no response, Victor continued to mumble, “Could it be because stw bullied Vanessa, so
