Chapter 7

Jessica broke her silence. “I brought her here.”
Ethan looked at her and said, “Sorry, I can’t marry you.”
Jessica sighed, “Ethan, you’re so heartless. I’ve waited for you all these years. Even though our marriage was arranged, I truly love you.”
Ethan held my hand. “I’ve waited for her for many years. That’s why I can’t accept you, and I don’t want to waste your time.”
I stared at him, confused.
Jessica nodded. “I get it. I’m not the type to cling to someone. To avoid making you hate me, I’ll step aside.”
Then, she smiled sweetly at James. “Mr. Clarke, I can’t marry someone who doesn’t have me in his heart. But don’t worry, this won’t affect the cooperation between our families.”
After Jessica left, he slammed his hand on the table in
anger.
“Samuel discarded her, and you took her back? Are you out of your mind?”
His words made my face burn with embarrassment.
Ethan tightened his grip on my hand. “Dad, I liked her before Samuel did.”

Both James and I were shocked.
James turned pale with rage. “I don’t have a son like you.”

Just then, an elderly lady, supported by the maid, slowly walked down the stairs with a cane.
James calmed down and called out, “Mom, what are you doing here?”
Ethan greeted her. “Grandma.”
Margaret Clarke frowned. “Ethan built his business from scratch and made it thrive. That shows he’s more capable than you.”
Clarke Group was founded by Ethan’s grandfather. James took over the company in his thirties after the old man passed away.
James wiped the sweat from his brow. “Mom, I just want Ethan to come back and manage the company.”
“You can’t force him to marry someone he doesn’t like,” Margaret said.
She tapped his calf with her cane. “Back when you and Sophie fell in love, your father and I didn’t get in the way. What
happened to you? Are you getting more foolish as you get older? Now, you want to arrange a marriage for your son?”
Sophie was Ethan’s mother.

James blushed with embarrassment. “Mom, I’m doing this for Clarke Group.”
Margaret thought for a moment, then said, “Alright, let’s find a middle ground. Ethan, you can keep running your company, but you also have to take care of Clarke Group. And you can marry someone you like. How about that?”
Ethan immediately agreed, “Grandma, I agree.”
“Then, it’s settled,” Margaret said, smiling at me. “I like this girl. I hope she’ll marry Ethan.”
I looked at her, feeling like I’d seen her before.
Suddenly, I remembered meeting her earlier that afternoon outside the company.
She had been wearing patched clothes. When she passed by, she seemed to be struggling to walk, so I helped her to a shaded spot to sit and rest. I even bought her water and some food.
I didn’t expect her to be Ethan’s grandmother.
James couldn’t argue with her. He had to accept me.
After leaving the house, Ethan spun me around in excitement.
He lovingly rubbed my face. “I can’t believe you’d come to find me. I’m so happy.”
We drove back to his apartment. Ethan told me that he had
