Owen’s heart clenched. She didn’t really want to leave the Morley family -what she truly wanted was to get away from Nathan.
Still, he nodded.
“I can promise no one will know, but I have to know where you’re going and that you’re safe.”
Katie couldn’t hold back any longer. She broke down, sobbing as she threw herself into Owen’s arms. “Grandpa, I’m sorry.”
It wasn’t that she couldn’t stay by his side and care for him–it was that she felt guilty for deceiving such a good grandfather, for using his kindness.
After all, only under his protection could she escape from Nathan with the baby growing inside her, start a new life, and raise her child in peace and quiet.
“When are you planning to leave?” Owen asked.
Katie bit her lip. “The day Nathan gets married.”
Only on that day would he be too distracted to keep an eye on her, giving her enough time to disappear for good.
“Then until–Nathan’s wedding, promise me you’ll visit me at the hospital every day.”
Katie nodded through her tears.

asleep. Only then did she quietly get up to head home and pack a few things.
But as soon as she stepped out, someone grabbed her wrist and dragged her into an empty stairwell. Katie struggled to look up only to find it was Nathan.
His eyes were sharp and cold. “Katie, Grandpa’s protecting you now because the family is still hiding all the dirty things you’ve done. He’s never tolerated any kind of scandal. When he finds out, do you really think you’ll still have a place in this family?”
