If Katie had only felt regret before, now all she felt was hatred.
She hated herself for ever falling in love with Nathan. She hated herself even more for not turning him away that night, for letting him take off her clothes when he was out of his mind, for feeling a twisted kind of pleasure in it–even knowing how much he despised her.
But if it hadn’t happened, she never would have seen just how cruel he could truly be.
Maybe it was for the best. Now, she could finally give up on him for good.
But the child–she was determined to keep the baby, no matter what.
Katie was racking her brain for a way to escape when suddenly the stairwell door burst open. Someone rushed in, pulled Katie into his arms, shielding her protectively. “The baby is mine. I’ll marry Katie,” he declared.
Katie stared in shock when she saw who it was. “Zane?”
Nathan’s eyes narrowed, searching Katie’s face for answers.
Years of silent understanding passed in a single look. Katie dropped her gaze and gave the faintest nod.
Nathan let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Zane Renner, I never realized you had feelings for my sister all this time.”
Katie panicked, stepping in front of Zane as if to shield him. “Nathan, don’t listen to him–he’s making things up. The baby isn’t his.”

Her heart was pounding. If anyone else in the world had ever treated her kindly–besides Owen and Nathan–it was Zane.
But she also knew that Zane and Nathan had been at odds for years, ever since clashing over that land auction three years ago. After that, they’d cut off all contact.
Seeing Katie so desperate to defend Zane only fueled Nathan’s anger.
“What are you so worried about? A month ago, Zane wouldn’t have been… good enough for the Morley family’s princess. But now you’re carrying some bastard’s child, and there’s still a man willing to take you? Why should I complain?
“Zane, if you’re willing to marry her, then on your wedding day, I’ll give you that two million as a wedding gift–every last cent, no strings attached.”
With that, Nathan turned and strode away, leaving Katie swaying on her feet, her face drained of color.
Even now, just a few careless words from him could still shake her to her
core.
Suddenly, Katie doubled over and coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Zane, alarmed, scooped her up in his arms and rushed out, only to nearly collide with Nathan in the hallway.
Nathan watched them–watched Zane carrying Katie away–and felt a surge of irritation he couldn’t quite name.
He told himself it was just because he hated them both.
But what he hated even more was the thought of them actually getting married.
