Chapter 4
Marques came back sooner than I anticipated, but there was a new chill in his demeanor.
He remained considerate. The first thing he did upon returning was to kiss me, just as he always did.
Then he proceeded to prepare a meal, remembering to add half a spoonful of honey to the water I drank.
But I knew him too well to be fooled. From those small actions, I sensed his unease.
What was he anxious about?
I suspected it had something to do with Kelly.
Before I could figure it out, I drifted into a light sleep.
Although a hint of awareness remained, my body wouldn’t respond.
Faint, intermittent voices resonated in my ears.
“Is this really okay? Won’t Mrs. Cruz get upset if she finds out?
“She won’t find out at all.
“We only took 400cc of blood. When the sleeping pills wear off, she’ll just assume she had a long nap.”
Kelly’s voice turned gentle and emotional.
“You’re so nice to me and the baby.”
Marques chuckled softly and gave her cheek a playful pinch.
“Silly girl, you’re my wife and carrying my child. If I’m not kind to you, who else would I be kind to?”
“The baby is nearly three months along, and I’m a bit worried. I’m already anemic and depending on Mrs. Cruz for blood transfusions. What will happen when it’s time to give birth?”
After a moment, I heard Marques’s voice.
Isn’t she here? You both have the same blood type. I won’t let anything happen to you.
My tears went silently as they rolled down my face.
A year ago, Marques had discovered Kelly to be my living blood donor, concerned for my well–being.
Now, a year later, I had become her living blood donor.
How ironic…
When I woke up, I found myself lying in the bedroom bed.
Were it not for the needle mark on the back of my hand serving as a reminder, I might have believed that everything from last night was merely a dream.
I rubbed my dry eyes. No more tears flowed.
Possibly out of guilt, Marques took me to an auction that evening.
He purchased items worth millions without hesitation, gifting them all to
- me.
Everyone there was filled with envy.

“I’ve always heard that Mr. Cruz is crazy about his wife, and today I saw it firsthand.”
“Indeed, while others might spend a lot, Mr. Cruz spent millions today just to please his wife.”
“I really envy Mrs. Cruz…”
As I listened to their envious comments, my heart felt like a still, stagnant pool.
Following the auction, there was a charity dinner.
That’s when I spotted Kelly.
Marques mentioned offhandedly, “She’s a new assistant we recently hired at the company.”
I nodded silently, acting as if I didn’t know her.
From then on, wherever we went, Kelly remained close to Marques.
They positioned themselves on either side of me–Kelly on my left and Marques on my right.
Some people, who hadn’t met me before, even confused her with Mrs. Cruz.
Kelly promptly waved her hands to correct them. “Oh no, I’m just Mr. Cruz’s assistant.”
After she spoke, she would nervously look my way.
A sarcastic smile crept onto my face as I turned and walked off.
“I’m heading to the restroom.”

Upon returning, I noticed them standing together.
Kelly beamed warmly, and Marques gazed at her tenderly. They truly seemed like a perfect pair.
I didn’t glance back as I started to leave.
However, Kelly quickly caught up with me.
“Mrs. Cruz, please don’t get the wrong idea. I’ve never attended a banquet like this, so I pleaded with Mr. Cruz to bring me along.
“I apologize for any inconvenience I’ve caused.
“I hope you’re not upset with Mr. Cruz.”
While Kelly was talking, she suddenly twisted her ankle, lost her balance, and lunged toward me.
There was a long flight of stairs just behind me.
In an instant, Marques dashed over.
Instinctively, I reached out to grab him, but Marques caught Kelly and held her close.
My hand merely brushed the edge of his shirt. He didn’t even look at me.
All his worry and fear were focused on Kelly.
A feeling of weightlessness overcame me, and tears flew away with the wind.
I plummeted down the lengthy staircase, the agony piercing deep into my bones, and I crumpled into a puddle of blood.
Through my unfocused vision, I caught a glimpse of Marques’s alarmed

expression.
“Honey…”
Simultaneously, my phone chimed with a message.
“The task you assigned is completed.”
