Chapter 2
About a dozen years ago, Antonio returned from a trip and told me about a girl from a poor area, the same age as our daughter.
She was struggling to survive, barely getting enough to eat, and wearing sandals in the dead of winter.
When he showed me the photos, my motherly instinct kicked in.
“Poor girl, we should help her,” I said.
Antonio’s eyes lit up. “Honey, why don’t we make a donation? She was born in the same month and year as our daughter. It’s like destiny.”

Behind us, Linda chimed in, “Yes, Mr. Kaufman is right. Ms. Parrish, it’s a good deed, and Miss Parrish might benefit from it.”
Linda had a point, and it wouldn’t be a burden for the family, so I agreed.
Over the years, Antonio visited Nina whenever he could.
He always told me she had no parents and he felt deeply sorry for her. I let him go, as I was often too busy to join him.
At the time, I truly believed I had married the right man. Antonio cared for me, Emily, and seemed genuinely kind–hearted.
So, I fully supported his efforts for Nina.

We brought her to the city and enrolled her in public schools.
I even pulled strings to get her into Emily’s high school when she struggled with her entrance exams.
I treated Linda like a sister. She could take time off whenever she wanted and didn’t have to wear a maid’s uniform. I even bought her designer clothes.
Since she didn’t have a car, I let her ride with Antonio.
I didn’t suspect anything until Emily’s party.
It turned out Linda was Antonio’s first love from his village. He married me for a better future.

Soon after I pieced it all together, they killed me and Emily.
Before Emily died, Nina stomped on her face with the high heels I had picked for her.
“Dumb bitch, just like your mom. From now on, I’m the only child. in this family,” she spat.
In the end, my pure and kind daughter died beside me in confusion and fear.
My parents grew suspicious of our sudden deaths and rushed back from abroad to investigate.
Antonio cut their brake lines, causing them to plunge off a cliff on their way to the police.

He staged our deaths as a fire, inherited everything, and gave Linda and Nina a life of luxury.
Over the years, I gave them my heart, but they treated me like dirt.
Antonio thought he could keep his secret forever.
But I had been through hell and now I was back to make them all pay.
I called Antonio again to ask about the gifts for Emily
He dodged the question and said, “They’re just knock–offs. Nina wants to look good too. If you expose her, her classmates will think Emily’s behind it. By the way when are you coming back?”
I was waiting for him to ask that.
“I’m on a business trip tonight, so I won’t be back.”
After hanging up, I turned on the surveillance cameras I had secretly installed to watch my cat!
I saw Antonio take Linda upstairs to my room right after our phone call.
Linda pretended to be angry and pushed Antonio away. “Why” does she get to wear expensive clothes while I wait for her hand–me–downs?”
Antonio opened my wardrobe generously. “Alright, pick
whatever you want. Let’s have some fun. See if you look better in her clothes.”
Linda pouted. “Her clothes smell like her. I don’t want them.”

She grabbed a pair of scissors and started cutting up my haute couture. Then it hit me–it wasn’t the cat ruining my clothes.
“That one’s new. I’ll wear it to Nina’s birthday party tonight.”
Hearing that, I knew the game was on.
