Chapter 12
He saw it.
The divorce agreement was placed in the gift she had carefully prepared.
She said that it was a surprise she gave to herself.
Karissa, had you already planned to leave me long ago…
With that, the lawyer took out another document from the desk behind him and handed it over.
Seeing Stanley with a gloomy face and about to tear up, he calmly added, “As long as you don’t mind the effort, you can tear as much as you want. I have a printer here, and I can print a new agreement anytime, please feel free.”
Stanley instantly turned into a frostbitten eggplant. He irritably ruffled his hair and, trying to calm down, said, “I’m sorry, I was just in a bad mood, but I really can’t be without her. Can you please tell me, did she… actually go to the mountaintop?”
The lawyer shook his head and said, “Sorry, I only handle divorces. I don’t know anything about other matters.”
Stanley grasped onto the only glimmer of hope “If she still wants to divorce me, it means she isn’t dead at all, right? If she were dead, she wouldn’t bother going through the trouble of divorcing me, would she?”
The lawyer just chuckled and said, “Is there necessarily a connection between the two? Even If you break Ms. Mullen’s heart, she wouldn’t want to die under the name of Mrs. Vargas, even if she were to die.”
Stanley chuckled self–deprecatingly and slumped onto the nearby sofa, feeling utterly drained.
The divorce agreement in his hand fell to the ground as he made his move.
He had no intention of picking it up, and the lawyer didn’t care either. Calmly, he took another copy of the divorce agreement and handed it over.
“Sign it, let it be considered as fulfilling Ms. Mullen’s final wish and granting her freedom.”
He said and handed over a pen, indicating that Stanley could sign.
Stanley sneered, “No matter how many coples of the divorce agreement you print, I will not sign it unless Karissa personally comes to talk to me. The years of emotions I have with her cannot be decided by a few thin sheets of paper! Whether alive or dead, Karissa can only be my wife!”
The lawyer, well–prepared, began to explain the law to him: “Mr. Vargas, as long as the couple has been separated for more than two years, divorce can be automatically granted, even if Ms. Mullen is not deceased. If you cannot find her within two years, you will still get divorced after two years.”
Stanley was somewhat of a public figure, and if his divorce had caused a huge uproar, it would have inevitably affected the company’s stock price.
But he couldn’t care less about that anymore: “It doesn’t matter, let her sue me, at least she will come to the court to see me then, right?”
“Mr. Vargas, Ms. Mullen has made up her mind and will divorce you no matter what. Even if you refuse to sign now, at most it will only be another two years of waiting, and the outcome will not change. Why bother with this unnecessary effort?
Stanley remained unmoved, his face resolute as he said, “It’s alright, I will definitely find Karissa within these two years.”
Before the lawyer could say anything, he received a phone call from the police: “Mr. Vargas, we have successfully located the last known location of your wife’s cellphone signal. Please come over as soon as possible, if it’s convenient for you.
”
Divorce Settlement was immediately forgotten.
Stanley had a sleepless night and went through emotional ups and downs. As soon as he got up, he felt a sudden blackout in front of his eyes.
But he still didn’t dare to delay. After confirming that he could drive, he immediately rushed to the address sent by the police at the fastest speed
He thought that the police had finally found Karissa’s whereabouts, but when he arrived at the destination, he was greatly

disappointed.
What appeared in front of me was a vast and unusually desolate wasteland. Apart from the wild grass swaying in the wind and the litter scattered all over the ground, there was not a single trace of a person to be seen. Not even a dilapidated house that could hide someone could be found.
Stanley went to the side of the police car and anxiously asked, “Are you sure Karissa came here? The landfill?”
The police officer approached and handed him the phone, which was placed in an evidence bag, saying, “Mr. Vargas, I’m sorry to inform you that we have only found this phone at the scene. It may have been transported here and buried from other trash bins. As for Ms. Mullen herself, her whereabouts have not been discovered yet. The phone has automatically shut down due to battery depletion.”
Stanley immediately recognized that it was Karissa’s phone and nearly fainted on the spot
The police officer promptly helped him: “Mr. Vargas, how are you? Do you need an ambulance?”
“No…” Stanley didn’t dare to faint. He forced himself to hold on and tirelessly asked for help from everyone he could see, “Excuse me, who has a power bank?”
He wanted to open Karissa’s phone to see if she had any messages left for him.
The people around looked at each other, shaking their heads one after another, indicating their helplessness.
Just as he was about to lose hope, a kind–hearted policewoman silently approached him and handed him a power bank, saying, “Try this, the charging cable might come in handy.
“Thank you, really, thank you so much…”
Stanley was so excited that he almost shed tears. He silently prayed to the heavens in his heart, hoping to find some clues related to Karissa this time. However, the heavens played a big joke on him.
In the phone, apart from missed calls from him and the bank to Karissa, there were also unread messages sent by Monique.
