The school had a parent–child activity that required both parents to attend. My husband didn’t tell me. Instead, he brought his female PhD student instead.[]
His excuse? I was too busy with work–didn’t want to bother me.[]

But today, my son Tommy had a bad allergic reaction.]

Sarah was standing right there in the doorway, holding Lucas’s jacket like some lovesick puppy.
“Professor,” she said, all sweet and worried, “everyone’s waiting for us.“]

“Mrs. Hayes, it’s the weekly meeting today. Everyone’s already there… it’d look really bad if the professor’s late.“[]

Sarah’s phone buzzed.[]

My blood went cold. I knew exactly who that was Lucas’s new star student. The same little shit who sat at my dinner table last month, eating my food.]
Sarah’s eyes went wide with fake shock as she quickly grabbed her phone.]]
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry!” she said, but I saw that tiny smile she was trying to hide.]
I stared straight at Lucas, my voice shaking. “This is how your students talk about me?“]
He let out this long, tired sigh and actually rolled his eyes.]]
“What am I supposed to do – control what everyone says? Come on.“[]
His voice got mean.
“And honestly? If you keep acting crazy like this, they’re gonna say way worse stuff.“]
He pushed past me like I wasn’t even there, heading for the door.[]

I threw myself in front of the door, blocking his way like some wild animal.]
“Sign the damn divorce papers! Right now, Lucas! I’m so done with this shit!“[]
My sharp scream made Sarah jump like she’d been shocked.[]

Lucas slammed his back against the wall and banged his head on the door frame a couple times. Like he was at his breaking point.]

“And that parent–teacher thing with Tommy? He just gets along better with Sarah, and you’re always working anyway, so I didn’t think to tell you.”
“I’m sorry, alright? It’s my fault. I’m a piece of shit. I deserved to die. Happy now?“]
Sarah jumped right in, bowing to me like some perfect little angel.]]
“Mrs. Hayes, I’m so sorry too.“[]
“Please don’t worry. Tommy will always be your son. I could never take that away from you.”
Betty, our housekeeper, heard all the yelling and came upstairs.[]
She’s been with Lucas since he was a kid – basically family at this point.]

“You’ve made your point. You’ve had your fight. What are you trying to do, drive Lucas crazy?“[]

They kept pushing for us to get divorced.
