All these years we’d been married, there were guys who’d hit on me without knowing I was taken.[]

I figured someone as brilliant as him would never get jealous like regular people do.[]
So why the hell was he acting like this now?
“That’s my business. Has nothing to do with you.“[]
“Lucas, you’re being way too controlling.“]
He frowned and gently wiped the sweat from my temple.[]
Then let out this long sigh.]
Like he was totally helpless.[]
“Alright, Maya, let’s just make up.“]
“This whole divorce thing was just… heat of the moment stuff anyway.“[]
“I came here today to give you an out.“]
“As long as you stop bringing up divorce every five minutes and quit picking fights with me, we can work this out.“[]
“What do you say?”
I stared into his eyes, trying to figure out if he was messing with me or being serious.[]
Yeah. He was dead serious.[]
I shoved his hands away and backed up a couple steps.[]
“Lucas, I think you’re confused. When I said divorce, I wasn’t playing games. I meant actual divorce.“[]
“Our marriage has been dead for ages. We can’t make this work anymore. Why keep torturing ourselves?“[]
“You and Sarah are perfect together. She likes you, Tommy likes her. You two should be happy.“[]
Lucas ran his hands through his hair, looking pissed, his voice all hoarse as he tried to explain:]
“How many times do I have to tell you? There’s nothing between me and Sarah.“[]

“She’s just my PhD student. I only brought her to that school thing because Tommy likes her. You and Tommy never got along – he didn’t want you there. What was I supposed to do?“]
“It’s such a small thing, and I’ve explained it a million times. Why can’t you just get it?“[]
I looked at him calmly. “I do get it.“[]
“Then why do you still want to divorce me?“]
I almost laughed.]
The brilliant Professor Hayes, known for his genius IQ, was acting like some clueless kid right now.[]
Asking me the most obvious questions.
“Because disappointment builds up little by little.“[]
“All these years, you let your parents treat me like shit. You let Tommy treat me like shit. Hell, you even let Betty look down on
me.”
“I was nothing but a servant in your house. Your son’s nanny. Everyone got to take shots at me. Well, I’m done with that now.“[]
“So Lucas, I’m not going back. Ever.”
Lucas just stood there, stunned.]
Finally, I saw real sadness creep into his eyes.[]
There were even tears forming at the corners.]]
Maybe this was the first time he actually realized our marriage might really be over.[]
“Stop looking back. Let the past stay in the past.“[]
With that, I turned around and walked out of that lounge.[]
