Chapter 25
Despite the heavy snow. I went out to get the ingredients. Once I made the turkey and lasagna, I brought them to the hospital.
There was only one table in the ward, big enough for just three people.
Ruben shot me a glance.
Knowing what he meant. I stood up and left the table.
Ruben glanced at me with surprise, but soon after, he refocused on serving lasagna to Lacey.
The chair in the hospital was uncomfortable. So Mason grabbed a pillow and put it behind Lacey.
Since Lacey loved lasagna, she had a lot.
As she gulped down the food, she coughed softly.
I couldn’t help but glance her way out of the corner of my eye.
Then I saw Mason patting her back right away.
Ruben, on the other hand, sprang to his feet and poured her a glass of
warm water.
Their words were stern, but their tone was full of concern. “Slow down. Nobody is gonna take your food.”
This scene was so familiar.
It was just that I used to be the one sitting among them, not Lacey.
Lost in memories, I didn’t avert my eyes
As if sensing my gaze, Ruben looked my way
Our eyes met, and the tenderness in his eyes was instantly replaced by
coldness
Pam washed over me. I ducked my head and began stuffing my face, as food was the only thing that could fill the hole in my heart.
Soon I got choked and started coughing uncontrollably,
Ruben frowned. “Stop pretending. Are you doing this cuz you saw Lacey choke
My heart broke.
I wasn’t pretending, but I willed myself to stop coughing as I didn’t want them to get the wrong idea.
The three didn’t spare me any attention again, just focusing on their dinner happily.
While they ate. Lacey chatted with them in glee. “My teacher said that in Northbeech, people can see the aurora in winter. I’m dying to admire it.”
Ruben ruffled her hair. “OK. Let’s go to Northbeech this winter.”
Mason also smiled. “Ruben and I will take some time off for that. Let’s stay there for a month. We’ll cover all the expenses.”
My hands shook, and I almost dropped the food.
They planned fast. In less than half an hour, they booked the night tickets.
Lacey cheered and held Ruben and Mason.
After a few minutes, she finally remembered I was in the room too. She tilted her head and asked, “Grace, would you like to join us?“.
It hit me that I should tell Ruben and Mason I was gonna work in Pryness Islands for the next 20 years.
I hesitated for a moment before answering. “I have a job and won’t be home for a while.”
Ruben cut me off impatiently. “You don’t have to tell us about that.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat and decided not to say anything
Ruben seemed to think of something and looked at me indifferently. “Lacey wants to get discharged tomorrow.
“Since she’s injured because of you, we shouldn’t let her stay on her own.
“I’m telling the maid to pack your things. She’ll be staying in your room.
As I was leaving the nation, there was no point in hoarding the room. So I nodded. “Of course. Anyway, I won’t stay at home much in the future.”
Ruben stared at me in shock. probably thinking he heard me wrong.
A few seconds later, his eyes were blazing with fury. “Are you trying to piss me off?”
