Chapter 2
Before I could react, bodyguards pinned me down, ripping off my shoes.
The hot sand beneath my feet burned my skin, and I could feel it blistering instantly.
On the live stream, bets were pouring in–millions wagered on how quickly I’d break
“Jennifer,” Wendy cooed, her voice dripping with false concern. “Just apologize, and this can all be over. I won’t hold it against you.
But her eyes gleamed with triumph.
“Apologize for what?” I spat, staggering forward despite the pain. “You’re the one who couldn’t be bothered to book a ticket in time, Stop playing the victim.”
I gritted my teeth, taking one painful step after another, determined not to engage with her.
Wendy’s eyes instantly welled up, lips tremble on cue. “It’s all my fault… I should’ve known better than to walk through the mountains alone. The rocks, the thorns…they felt like nails and hurt my feet like blades, maybe I deserved it
“Enough.” Aaron’s grip on her tightened, his glare slicing through me. “You really still think you’re some privileged heiress, don’t you?”
Aaron’s cold voice cut through the air as he snapped his fingers.
“I said make it authentic. Come on! Spread the nails on the ground. What happened to her should happen to you as well.
As soon as the words left his mouth, the ground ahead of me was suddenly scattered with thousands of sharp nails, half–buried in the sand, their deadly tips glinting in the sunlight.
Before I could even react, my foot stepped right into one, the sharp metal cutting into my skin, blood seeping out immediately.
The warm blood flowed down my foot, turning the sand around me crimson. My face went deathly pale.
The private doctor in the helicopter spoke up, concerned. “Sir, Mrs. Preston has a history of anemia. If she loses much more blood-”
“I know she’s weak, that’s exactly why you’re here,” Aaron replied with a sneer. “I just need to lock some of that arrogance out of her. If anything happens to Jennifer, you have my permission to land and help her.”
He paused, and then continued coldly, “Besides, she’s not an idiot. Doesn’t she know how to avoid stepping on nails?”
But the nails were so thickly scattered in the sand, and with my bare feet, how could I possibly avoid them?
Soon, blood pooled beneath my feet, and I felt myself swaying, on the verge of passing out.
Aaron’s gaze softened for a moment, but before he could speak, Wendy, sensing an opportunity, chimed in with a soft voice:
“Aaron, all she has to do is to say sorry and this will all be over. But now with the live, so many people are betting on this. Even if I want to simply forgive her, she still has to give you a way out, right?”
“Yeah, you know she’s been spoiled all her life. How could she ever respect people like us?” Wendy continued, her words biting and
laced with malice.
Her words seemed to ignite Aaron’s temper, his jaw clenched. His voice grew.cold and harsh as he turned to me, glaring
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing. You’ve always looked down on me because you’re the daughter of the Carter family. If you don’t apologize, then keep walking, and let’s see how far you get!
His chilling words stung in my ears as Llooked at the man I had once loved. My heart felt like it was being torn apart.
Five years since I’d defled my family for him. Five years of building Monocle Media from the ground up together.
He’d once cried over a papercut on my finger. Now he watched me bleed without blinking.
I once thought our love would last forever until my family, Carter of the upper east side, fall. After that, he suddenly grew tired of my

“high–society” attitude and began to favor Wendy, the obedient one.
He even threw me into the desert just to defend her, to take out her frustration.
At that moment, I felt like my heart had turned to stone.
The live stream was still going, and the comments flooded in:
[Just give up already, you’re never getting out of there. I’m so tired of watching ]
[Exactly! I bet my rent money on this, just apologize so I can get my money back!]
“Looks like no one believes you can get out of there. Give up. Just apologize and end this.”
Wendy smirked as she spoke, but before I could respond, something unexpected happened. A new comment appeared, and it was from
an anonymous user.
The message stunned everyone:
[I bet Jennifer can make it out of the desert. The stake? $50 million.]
The live chat went wild.
