Chapter 8
Meanwhile, I watched Karl typing furiously on his phone, his fingers flying across the screen
“Have that ‘#RedemptionAre” hashtag taken down. I don’t want Jennifer to see any more news about him!”
[You’re still invested in this? You need to get a life!]
Who would’ve thought the heir to Blackthorn Capital–a man who commanded boardrooms with a single glance–would be sitting here, petty as hell, mass–reporting hashtags and arguing with strangers online?
Jcouldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity, leaning back casually on the sofa, pretending like I wasn’t paying attention
“So, Karl, when exactly did you start having feelings for me?”
At my question, Karl froze mid–type. His expression shifted–something between embarrassment and resolve. Finally, he set his phone down.
“The first time I saw you.”
That was when my parents decided to adopt a child to be my playmate. We’d gone to the group home, and all the other kids had rushed to impress me
except one.
Karl had just watched me. Quiet. Like a stray puppy who’d given up on being chosen
“I hadn’t eaten for three days. When I saw you, I thought, if you could take me with you, I would follow you for the rest of my life!
“And then, you reached out your hand to me
I was momentarily stunned, a vague memory surfacing in my mind of a boy with a lingering, ambiguous $ gaze.
Over the years, I had sensed my own feelings, but due to our complicated relationship, I never had the courage to admit it.
But looking at Karl now, with his sincere and serious expression, I knew I couldn’t keep deceiving myself anymore.
“I have to admit I have feelings for you, too.”
As soon as the words left my lips, he kissed me deeply, his lips soft but filled with longing.
Our wedding was set for a month later. My parents, who had been living overseas, were also planning to return for the ceremony.
In the meantime, news about our upcoming marriage spread quickly. The combination of the young heir to Blackthorn Capital and the daughter of the Carter family was enough to overshadow the previous “#RedemptionAre” headlines.
The day of the ceremony, I stood in my white gown, bathed in sunlight and well–wishes.
But amidst all the joy, I spotted Aaron standing in the corner, silently watching me.
His gaze was filled with sorrow, and when our eyes met, I quickly averted mine.
Just as the ceremony was about to start, there was suddenly a commotion from the crowd.
Before I even realized what was happening, Wendy lunged at me with a knife, her face contorted with rage.
“Why? Why
hy did I lose everything–my savings, my friends–while you get to marry the heir? It’s not fair!”
“Jennifer Carter, I lost EVERYTHING because of you! If Lean’t be happy, neither can you!”
The heavy train of my dress trapped me. I couldn’t move-
In that critical moment, Aaron stepped forward, blocking me with his body. In a flash, he collapsed to the ground, bleeding.
Looking at me, he murmured, “glad… she didn’t… hurt you…”
Wendy was subdued by security and quickly handed over to the police, but Karl was already standing in front of me, protecting me.

He wanted to pause the wedding because of the shock, but I insisted on going ahead, and we completed the ceremony as planned.
The cold ring slipped onto my finger, replacing any lingering fear with a sense of security and happiness.
“I made you wait too long. I don’t want you to wait anymore,” Karl said, his voice full of affection.
With the blessings of everyone around us, we embraced and kissed.
Wendy was sued for attempting to harm me with a venomous snake and for her violent actions at the wedding. She would be facing decades in prison.
Aaron was saved after the attack, but once he recovered, he disappeared.
It wasn’t until two years later that I heard news about him again. He had become a well–known entrepreneur in France, making headlines in international news.
In an interview, he spoke quietly about our past, and at the end, he said each word slowly:
“I truly hope that I can get another chance to make things right. If I had one more chance, I would cherish her properly.

I didn’t even look at the screen I switched the channel to a kids‘ cartoon.
My daughter, who had been dozing in my arms, suddenly perked up, her little voice calling out,
“Mommy, so nice.”
Karl wrapped his arms around both of us from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.
I knew then that I had the happiness I had always longed for.
If I had another chance, I wouldn’t make the same mistakes. I would have been with the right personmuch earlier.
