Chapter 5
Jodie hit me with the shoe with great strength, and the shoe landed on my head accurately.
Besides, I was pregnant.
Trying my best to fight against the dizziness, I drove out of Stone Town; then I couldn’t take it anymore and finally passed out.
It was already the next morning when I woke up.
It was raining heavily, and Stone Town behind me was already. submerged. I could barely see a few roofs.
I took a photo and sent it to Antonio.
“The flood is here. I don’t know whether Jodie and Vernon are alive or
not. Come back.”
Yet, he hadn’t replied even after a long time.
The water level kept rising at the same time.
I had to drive forward.
Soon, I ran into Lonnie. At the sight of me, he thanked me excitedly.
“You saved our lives. Without you, hundreds of people would have died last night…”
I interrupted him, “Mr. Potter, did Jodie and Vernon evacuate?”
He was stunned. “They didn’t evacuate last night? I didn’t see them.”

Helpless, I sighed, “They wouldn’t believe me no matter what and even hit me with a shoe. I had to leave.”
He stomped his foot, furious.
“How could they be so stupid? And Antonio is equally infuriating! He said so firmly on the phone there wouldn’t be a flood. If anything happened to Jodic and Vernon, it’d be his fault!”
“The rescue team will be here soon. We’ll go back together to find them.”
By the time the rescue team arrived, it was no longer raining. I took a rubber boat together with them and headed to Antonio’s parents‘ place.
From afar, I saw a person sitting on the rooftop.
It was Jodie.
Upon seeing me, she burst into tears.
“Vernon got flooded away trying to save me.
“Grace, we were wrong. We should have listened to you last night and left with you…”
Her cries didn’t make me feel a thing. I said flatly, “Let’s go find Vernon.”
The team searched for an entire day, but Vernon was nowhere to be seen.
I took out my phone and was about to call Antonio.
Just then, Yvonne sent me a video; she was enjoying fondue together with Antonio, who was feeding her chocolate.
I texted her, “Antonio’s dad is missing in the flood. His mom has been crying non–stop. Tell him to come back.”

Soon, Yvonne replied, “You’re sick, Grace.

“Antonio doesn’t love you at all. Drop the act already; you need help. Stop. bothering us!”
I tried to send her the photos of the flood, only to see the notification that she had already blocked me.
Then I tried Antonio’s cell and heard the busy tone again. I texted him, but he still didn’t reply.
I had no choice but to give up.
After comforting Jodie for a while, I drove back downtown.
I rested for a night and got an abortion the next day.
A day later, Lonnie called me.
“Grace, we’ve found Vernon’s body. Jodie has been crying, and we can’t reach Antonio.
“You’re Jodie and Vernon’s future daughter–in–law. Could you come over to take care of Vernon’s funeral?”
I said flatly, “I broke up with Antonio already and am not obliged to do this. You should try to find a way to reach Antonio.”
I had already packed up. After hanging up the phone, I glanced at my home with Antonio one last time and then left with my luggage without
hesitation.
After a week, Antonio finally came back. He called me, saying, “Where are you, Grace? And where’s your stuff?
“You just wouldn’t drop the act, would you? How could you ask Mr.

Potter to tell me my dad’s dead? This is a bit over the line, don’t you
think?”
I was stunned for a few seconds before saying helplessly, “You just wouldn’t believe me no matter what, right? Antonio, you’re hopeless. Haven’t you seen the news? The Stone Cliff Reservoir released.
floodwater, and Stone Town was flooded.
“Vernon’s body is probably still at home. Go home and make the arrangements.”
Immediately, Antonio cursed, “Grace, you vicious bitch! How come I didn’t know you were so sick before? You actually curse my dad again. and again!
“Where the fuck are you? Get your ass back here!”
Antonio was hopelessly stupid.
I answered flatly, “I got rid of the baby and moved out already. We’re done, Antonio.
“Instead of cursing me, you might as well call Jodie. If it weren’t for you, Vernon wouldn’t have died at all.”
