Chapter 51
It was quite unusual for Eric to bring a stranger. Everyone was surprised and tried to guess who Abigail was.
Abigail heard the people around her whispering to one another.
“Who is that woman? She seems rather close to Mr. Gomez.”
“Is she his secretary? I heard that his secretary is actually his lover. Last time, he even attended a birthday banquet with his secretary.”
“But she appears to be blind, so she’s probably not his secretary?”
These hushed conversations made Abigail feel embarrassed. She inadvertently clenched her fist.
Though she couldn’t see, she could feel the inquisitive looks from those around her.
Nicole had entered the venue a while ago. The moment she saw Eric arrive, a bright smile appeared on her face. However, when she noticed Abigail behind him, her smile froze.
One of her acquaintances said jokingly, “Hey. Isn’t that your Mr. Gomez? He’s finally here. But who’s the woman beside him?”
“Ooh, she seems quite chummy with him,” another woman teased.
They were all secretaries. Some were even Nicole’s former classmates.
However, Nicole often, intentionally or otherwise, flaunted her close relationship with Eric. She would casually bring up how much Eric cared about her, making them feel as if she would soon become the wife of Gomez Corporation’s president.
Even though they congratulated Nicole, they were jealous. Now that another woman had appeared beside Eric, all of them were somewhat delighted. Of course, Nicole could tell. Her face instantly darkened.
“She’s just his distant cousin. His relatives asked him to take care of her. Besides, she’s blind. Don’t bully a disabled person.”
Upon hearing that, they looked at Abigail’s eyes and noticed that her gaze was indeed empty and unfocused.
They pouted, somewhat disappointed. “Oh. So that’s how it is.”
While looking at Eric and Abigail, Nicole furrowed her brow imperceptibly and approached them. “Eric, why did you bring Ms. Reed along tonight?” she asked before turning to Abigail.
At a glance, she recognized the gown Abigail was wearing. It was an expensive made–to–order gown from a luxury brand.
The red ruby necklace around Abigail’s neck seemed to be the one Eric had told someone to bid on at an auction abroad a while ago.
Back then, Nicole had imagined it to be a gift Eric had gotten for herself. However, the necklace was now on Abigail’s neck.
She thought, “She’s blind. Does she even deserve that?”
“I took her out for a stroll.” Eric’s tone was impassive. “You don’t need to bother yourself with me.”
Nicole said immediately, “That won’t do. I’m your secretary. I should stay by your side.”
At that, she glanced at Abigail and added, “It’s not easy for Ms. Reed to move around here. Why don’t I help you look after her?” Without waiting for Eric’s answer, she reached for Abigail’s hand with a smile. “Ms. Reed, I’ll take you somewhere else to rest…” However, before her hand could touch Abigail’s, Abigail dodged her.
“Get away from me.” Abigail’s face was filled with disgust.
“Ms. Reed…” Nicole was somewhat taken aback, and her expression promptly dimmed. “That was rude of me.”
“Abigail.” Eric furrowed his brow slightly.
Abigail sneered, released Eric’s hand, and said calmly, “Mr. Gomez, you’re a busy man. I wouldn’t dare to trouble you. I can find a spot to sit by myself.” After saying that, she tried to leave.
Eric yanked her back and said disgruntledly, “Why are you throwing a fit again? This place is packed, and you can’t see. How would you even know where to go? What if you bump into someone?”
