Chapter 53
1/1
As soon as Eric left, Nicole grabbed Abigail’s hand and huffed, “Come on, Ms. Reed. I’ll take you somewhere to rest.”
Abigail wanted to break free, but Nicole’s grip was firm.
“You don’t want to get into a fight with me here, do you?” Nicole leaned closer to her ear and spoke through gritted teeth. “There’s a lot of people here. If we cause a scene, Eric will be the one embarrassed, not you.”
Abigail stopped struggling, not because she was afraid of embarrassing Eric, but because she wanted to see what Nicole would do.
Pleased that she had calmed down, Nicole brought her to a vacant corner before letting go of her hand with disgust.
“No offense, but why is a blind person like you wandering around instead of staying home? Don’t you know you’d be a bother?”
Nicole made no attempt to disguise her malice. “You’re already blind. Why are you still clinging to Eric? Back then, you weaseled your way into his bed, and he was forced to marry you.
“Not only can you not help him, but you’ve also become his burden. If you understand your situation even remotely, you should get a divorce right away. Stop ruining his life.”
Abigail chuckled. “Eric has such a good friend. Whether or not we get a divorce has nothing to do with you, does it? Or perhaps he asked you to talk to me about this?”
“Of course, he did,” Nicole said nonchalantly. “Without his permission, how would I dare to say that to you? Also, don’t assume that Eric’s happy to bring you to this banquet. It’s just that if he abandons you now, his reputation will suffer.
“You’re blind and helpless. If he abandons you now, others will surely accuse him of being heartless. So, if you’re smart, leave by yourself in secret. Stop bothering him.”
Abigail suddenly understood. So this was why Eric refused to divorce her.
She’d held onto some hope that the reason he wouldn’t divorce her was because he still had feelings for her. It turned out she had been overthinking it. “I see. So that’s why.” Abigail smiled.
Nicole looked disgusted. “Why are you smiling?”
When Nicole saw Abigail dressed in a magnificent gown and expensive jewelry, standing beside Eric while he introduced her as his wife, she was insanely jealous.
Abigail’s smile made Nicole feel as if she was showing off and mocking her.
Her irritation grew as she thought about that, and she raised her hand to slap Abigail.
However, before her strike landed, another hand grabbed her hand in midair.
Enraged, Nicole turned to see an unfamiliar man.
“Who are you?” she asked coldly.
Ryan flung her hand away and shielded Abigail behind him. He said grimly, “Get lost.”
Nicole’s face paled, but then she heard Abigail say, “Ryan?”
“It’s me.” Ryan’s expression instantly softened as he turned to look at her. “I’m here. Don’t be afraid.”
Nicole narrowed her eyes, thinking that something was going on between the two. Could it be that Abigail was having an affair?
“What are you looking at? Get lost!” Ryan turned and glared at Nicole.
She scoffed before turning to leave.
However, she didn’t go far. Instead, she hid in the shadows and observed them.
When she noticed Ryan was leading Abigail away, she instinctively moved to follow them. Yet on second thought, she realized it would be better if Abigail was gone.
When Eric asked about it later, she’d say that Abigail was taken away by her lover. He’d be even angrier then.
