Chapter 60
“Abby, I’m so glad to see you! I was worried sick. Eric, that scum, wouldn’t let me see you. I caused a scene in front of his villa, but he told people to drive me away.”
“I heard your voice then.” Abigail smiled. “Thank you, Jac. You’re the only one who cares so much about me.”
“That’s nonsense.” Jacinta stroked her head. “Eric didn’t do anything to you, did he?”
Abigail shook her head. “No, he didn’t. He said that he’d help me get my eyes treated. And until my eyes are healed, I can only stay with him.”
“Yeah, right.” Jacinta scoffed and spoke in rage. “He was the one who took the corneas back then. If it weren’t for him, would you have ended up in this situation?”
The doctor, Lenny Sullivan, who was standing nearby, blurted out, “Hurry up. If you take too long, I’m afraid the butler outside will grow suspicious.”
“Okay, Lenny,” Jacinta promptly responded and pulled Abigail aside.
Lenny was Jacinta’s senior. Abigail had seen him once before, but he didn’t know her.
The first time she came here for a check–up, she heard his name and wondered if he was that senior Jacinta had talked about.
After asking him during her last visit, she finally learned that it was indeed him. So, she asked him to tell Jacinta to come see her. She desperately needed her help right now.
Abigail placed a bottle of pills into Jacinta’s hand.
“What’s this?” Jacinta picked it up and looked at it, confused.
Abigail said in a hushed tone, “Someone gave it to me. They said that it’s a newly developed medication that can relieve the pain in my eyes. But I suspect that there’s something wrong with it. Jac, can you analyze it for me?”
“Who gave you this?” Jacinta unscrewed the lid, poured out the pills, and took a sniff. Her sniffing revealed nothing.
“Eric’s father,” Abigail said.
“Eric’s father? Does he care about you that much?” Jacinta was stunned.
She was aware of Abigail’s situation within the family. She also knew that Chanse spent most of the year abroad and that Abigail had only met him a handful of times.
“That’s why I was suspicious,” Abigail said.
Jacinta said promptly, “Abby, don’t worry. Leave this to me. It will take some time to get the lab report, though. Come back after a week. I’ll tell you the results then.”
Abigail nodded. “Okay.”
Peter glanced at the time. Half an hour had passed.
He was somewhat restless. He knew how important Abigail was to Eric. If anything happened to her, what should he do?
When he was about to knock on the door, Abigail came out.
Peter quickly asked, “Mrs. Gomez, are you alright? What did the doctor say?”
Lenny walked out. “It’s nothing serious, just an upset stomach. She simply needs to take care of what she eats, then she’ll be alright”
Peter nodded quickly. “Alright. Thank you, doctor.”
On the way back, Peter informed Eric of the situation.
Sitting quietly in the backseat, Abigail listened as Peter updated Eric. She couldn’t help but sneer. Just as she thought, Eric was monitoring her every
move.
Back at the villa, Nancy approached her and asked with concern, “Mrs. Gomez, how did it go?”
“It’s alright. It’s just an upset stomach,” Abigail said.
Nancy quickly took her hand in worry. “Was the food I made in the past few days not to your liking? I’ll make some adjustments then…”
Abigail said nothing. She felt quite guilty.
In truth, there was nothing wrong with the food Nancy made. Abigail loved them. She simply needed an excuse to go to the hospital.
At night, while listening to an audiobook on the couch, Abigail suddenly heard noises coming from downstairs.
