Chapter 67
“Abby did that? No way.” Derrick knitted his brows. “I know her temperament. She’s a kind girl. Why would she hit you? Did you say something that upset her?”
Sally wailed, “I didn’t, Grandpa! We were alone. Who else could it be but her? Do I have any reason to accuse her?”
“My goodness!” Miranda quickly held Sally in her arms, turning to Eric. “I don’t believe Abigail would do that either, but Sally can’t be lying. What’s going on?”
At that moment, Eric fixed his stare on Sally. “Did you just leave her alone there?”
“Huh?” She was taken aback.
Without a word, he stood up and strode away. When he arrived in the hallway, he saw Abigail standing there, facing toward the garden with her back toward him.
The light fell on her, soft and hazy like the mist. Her face showed no expression, but he could feel her emotions–she was in pain.
All of a sudden, Eric realized his insistence on bringing her to the family dinner might’ve been a grave mistake. It was the same when he forced her to attend the banquet previously.
He wanted her to get some fresh air from time to time, yet he carelessly overlooked her feelings. Without being able to see, she must’ve felt greatly insecure and anxious inside, yet he did nothing to take care of her.
He walked toward her. “You’re here.”
Abigail trembled slightly, and after a while, she said, “Here to take me for an interrogation?”
She was confident Sally must’ve told on her. It was a golden opportunity that she wouldn’t have missed.
“No, nothing like that. I just wanted to help you back to the living room, considering Sally had left you alone. She also said you’d hit her. What’s with that?”
Abigail softly replied, “You’re trying to stand up for your little cousin, huh?”
“Considering our relationship, she doesn’t quite deserve that privilege yet.”
“Well, she deserved what I did to her because she pissed me off with her words. That’s all.”
She didn’t plan on explaining further. She was tired, restless, frustrated, and fatigued. Why did unnecessary drama love her so much?
Since going blind, she had always wanted to be left alone peacefully. Yet, that seemed to be an impossible task. Some people just had to annoy her and seek trouble with her.
“Let’s go back there. I believe in you, but Uncle Charles‘ family might not. Let’s explain everything to them.” Eric paused briefly, continuing, “Don’t worry. You just need to tell the truth. No matter what happens, I’ll be on your side.”
“Is that so?” Abigail chuckled sarcastically, then walked forward with her cane. Seeing that, he grabbed her hand and led her back to the living room. There, Charles and Miranda were comforting Sally, while Chanse and Lucy wore furrowed brows; especially Lucy, whose expression was clearly contemptuous.
Although she disregarded Abigail, she didn’t believe Abigail would hit Sally for no reason considering she still represented Chanse’s family. Instead, she knew all too well just how low Charles‘ family could go. If anything, they deserved some backlash.
