Chapter 73
Eric noticed the steady breaths of the person next to him. When he looked over, he realized that Abigail had fallen asleep.
She must have missed out on a couple of nights of good sleep to doze off here.
He carried Abigail into her room.
The next day, while Eric was sorting out some documents, his phone suddenly rang. They had found a donor for the corneal transplant. The donor was a terminally ill high school student whose family members had decided to give up medical treatment.
However, it was not for free. The family members were asking for 500 thousand dollars.
This was a small amount for Eric so he immediately said, “Tell them we accept the offer. Do everything to ensure that we have the corneas. Make sure no one else can take it from us.”
Nicole happened to hear everything as she was next to him. Her ears perked up. She was stunned for a moment.
Did this mean that they had found a donor?
Resentfully, she bit down on her lip. How could Abigail be this lucky? Why couldn’t she just stay blind forever?
Nicole waited for Eric to hang up before she spoke, “Eric, you found corneas for Ms. Reed? Does this mean she’ll get her eyes fixed?”
Eric nodded and smiled, “Yes. I’ve instructed someone to secure the corneas. I plan to have Abigail scheduled for surgery as soon as possible.”
Nicole volunteered, saying, “Eric, why don’t you leave this matter to me? I’ve had problems with my eyes before so I’m familiar with the entire process,”
Eric gave it a moment’s thought before eventually turning her down, “It’s fine. I don’t want to bother you with this.”
Abigail had always felt repulsed about how he had robbed her of the corneas that he’d given to Nicole. If she found out that it was Nicole who arranged the surgery, she would definitely feel sick to her stomach.
Nicole paused for a brief moment before forcing a smile and said, “Alright, then.”
When she walked out of the office, her face darkened.
He used to let her take care of these things. Why was he suddenly refusing to let her be involved? Could it be that Abigail had been telling him things behind her back?
Nicole was livid
She walked into the utility room with her phone and made a call.
“Mr.“ucker? It’s me, Nicole. I’m Eric Gomez’s secretary. We’ve met before…
“Oh, it’s nothing. I just heard that Eric has found a suitable donor for Abigail and that surgery will be scheduled as soon as possible. I just happened to remember that your sister had died from some eye condition as well, so I thought I should let you know…”
Eric found it odd when Gavin came to look for him out of the blue.
To make things worse, the first thing he said upon stepping into his office was, “Why did you have to find a donor for Abigail? She became blind because she deserved it! It’s karma!
“Don’t tell me you don’t know what caused my sister’s death?”
Eric’s face turned somber as he asked, “Where did you get the news from?”
“That’s none of your concern!” Gavin exploded with rage and continued, “You haven’t been discreet about your search for the corneas. So, how could I have not known about it? You should just leave her be!
“She deserves it. If her father hadn’t invented the drug, my sister wouldn’t have died. She should just die to atone for causing my sister’s death…” “That’s enough!” Eric shouted with a deep voice. “What does she have to do with the sins her father committed? I’ve turned a blind eye to the ways you’ve mistreated her all these years. You’d better not push this too far!”
“I’ve gone too far?” Gavin scoffed. “My sister’s dead. Have I gone too far? Her family owes my family a life!”
Gavin’s eyes were bloodshot as he bellowed, “My family’s not the only one they owe a life to, countless families out there have lost loved ones because of them! Do you think they’re able to make up for the loss they’ve caused?
“It’s not like I want Abigail to die. All I want is for her to lose her eyesight, is that too much to ask for?”
“Eric Gomez, I think of you as a brother but you’re here taking Abigail’s side!” Gavin was utterly disappointed with Eric.
Eric’s face hardened, “Are you done? I’ve told you many times before. This isn’t Abigail’s fault!
“I’m also deeply heartbroken about your sister’s death, but Abigail’s father has already received his punishment!
“I’ve nothing else to say if you insist on distorting my intentions.”
