Chapter 85
“Thanks. Once I’ve recovered, I’ll buy you a meal and thank you properly,” said Abigail.
Ryan smiled. “Sure. I’ll hold you to it.”
Just as she was about to return the phone to Lenny, she suddenly heard Eric’s voice from outside. It sounded like he had come back.
Lenny hurriedly took the phone back from Abigail’s hand and pretended to have just completed checking the equipment. Then, the door was opened right after that. Eric was stunned momentarily when he entered the ward and saw Lenny. “Are you making your rounds, Dr. Sullivan?”
Lenny nodded. “Yeah. I’m here to check up on her.”
“How is she now?” Eric asked calmly.
“The operation went smoothly, and she’s not in danger now. All she has to do is to get some rest,” explained Lenny.
“Does that mean that she’ll be able to see again once her eyes recover fully?”
“Yes. If nothing else goes wrong, that should be the results.”
“That’s good.” Eric could finally relax after hearing that.
After Lenny had left, Eric walked to the bed and said to Abigail, “See? I told you I would cure your eyes, and I would always keep my promises.”
She kept quiet for a moment before asking him, “Where were you while I was in the operation?”
Eric was stunned for a moment, thinking that she had already found out about his absence earlier. After all, why would she suddenly ask something like that
So, he explained, “I received a call while you were still inside the operation room. Nicole was in an accident, and since she didn’t have any other family or friends here, I had no choice but to see her.”
“Does that mean that you’ve done some paperwork for Nicole?” Abigail smirked mockingly. “What happened? Is she injured badly or in a coma now? Or did she become blind from the accident?”
“Abigail!” Eric scolded her in his deep voice, “Watch your mouth! Since you know how it feels to be blind, don’t you know how important it is to have your eyes?”
She gritted her teeth and still felt furious. She didn’t want to be that harsh at all. But when she thought about how Eric had left her during her operation to take care of Nicole’s procedures, Abigail started trembling in anger.
Even though she had decided to give him up and not love him anymore, she was still reacting that way. After all, those who were loved would always be the lucky ones, and she was always the one being abandoned. She was already too familiar with that kind of feeling.
Abigail said coldly, “Something happened during my operation, and I was losing a lot of blood. The nurse needed your signature for some papers, but you weren’t around.”
Eric’s face fell when he heard that. “What happened?”
“You must have thought that nothing could’ve happened to me, right?” She chuckled coldly. “Well, guess what? Something did happen! I lost a lot of blood, and if it weren’t for the doctor doing something about it immediately, who knew what would’ve happened?
“What did you say to me before the operation? You said you would be waiting outside the whole time, didn’t you? How many times have you broken your promises to me?”
Eric’s face turned pale, and he paused for a long while before saying, “It’s my fault for leaving halfway through your operation. I didn’t think something like that would happen at all. Besides, Nicole was in danger back then, and she had no one else to help her.”
Abigail took a deep breath and didn’t want to argue with him anymore. After all, the more they talked about it, the more incredulous she felt. Since he didn’t love her in the first place, she figured she would look like a clown if she kept talking about it.
“Sure. I understand now. I’m getting tired and need some rest, so you should leave now.” She pulled up her blanket and tiredly lay down.
Eric frowned deeply and left the ward in the end. Then, he asked the two bodyguards outside, “Did something happen during Abigail’s operation?”
The bodyguards exchanged glances, and their faces slowly turned pale. “Yes. She lost a lot of blood out of nowhere…”
“Why didn’t you tell me about it sooner?”
They hurriedly explained, “We did try to call you back then, but we couldn’t reach you on your phone at all!”
