Chapter 14 Superficial
“Des, what’re you looking at?”
Belinda noticed he was distracted and tugged at his sleeve.
Trees blocked his way, so he withdrew his gaze. “Nothing.”
Then, he looked ahead with a heavy heart.
Meanwhile, Guadalupe was walking after Ezequiel.
When Ezequiel answered a call under a tree, he turned around to glance at her.
Guadalupe stopped walking and stepped back to a mushroom–shaped pavilion.
She rubbed her forehead, feeling like an idiot.
After the phone call, Guadalupe walked to Ezequiel with embarrassment but made light of it. “You’re right. I can’t do well in certain circumstances. How can I be a good fit? Sorry that I bothered you.”
“You followed me just to confirm you’re not a good fit?” Ezequiel raised an eyebrow.
He was hard–hitting.
Guadalupe didn’t know how to respond.
So she laughed with embarrassment. Since there was no hope, she stopped pretending. “I came over to try and

convince you. But I left you a bad impression before and made myself a joke today. Since you don’t want to hire me, I’ll leave early, in case I offend you again.”
Ezequiel looked distant. “You think I refused you for that?”
Guadalupe asked, “Or what could it be?”
“Look at your outfit. If I agree to hire you, I may be seen as superficial,” Ezequiel said. Then, he leaned in and whispered, “Even if I am, I don’t want others to know.”
Guadalupe didn’t see it coming.
So her face and ears flushed red.
He was telling her dismissively that she wouldn’t get the job by seducing him. At least she thought so.
She didn’t explain herself. Instead, she said with mortification, “Thanks for telling me that. I’ll go now. Bye.”
Before he could respond, she rushed out of the forest.
When Roselyn and Felipe got back, they found Ezequiel was alone and thought it was weird.
“Where is Guadalupe?”
“She left,” Ezequiel answered.
“What?” Roselyn was surprised. She figured that Guadalupe had failed, but she refused to believe it. After all, Ezequiel seemed to like Guadalupe. Thus, Roselyn couldn’t help but say, “Mr. Hodge, Guadalupe is capable…”
Ezequiel interrupted, “She doesn’t look capable.”

Roselyn was sophisticated, so she understood what the problem was through his words.
She thought men were all visual. But it turned out that Ezequiel was an exception.
“Well, it’s a misunderstanding,” she said. “It’s my fault. She didn’t dress like that when she came. I thought her outfit was too conservative…so I made her change into the outfit I had brought.”
Ezequiel was speechless.
Guadalupe got changed when she got home.
Then, she sat in front of the dressing table with frustration.
Was she nobody without Zenith Group and Desmond?
When she felt a little better, she took out her phone to apologize to Roselyn. To avoid distractions, she had muted it.
She found she had many missed calls.
Some were from Desmond.
And the others were from Roselyn.
Guadalupe ignored Desmond’s calls and called Roselyn back. “Sorry. I felt unwell because of low blood sugar, so I left without telling you.”
Roselyn responded after seconds of silence, “I’m the one who should say sorry.”
Guadalupe understood what Roselyn meant.

“Never mind. I just wanted to take a shot. You’ve helped me a lot. I’ll repay you.”
“Don’t mention it. I’ve explained to Ezequiel about your outfit, but he gave no response. I asked Mr. Pierce for his phone. Do you want to try again?”
Guadalupe thought for several seconds and answered, “Never mind. I’m not fated to get the job.”
Roselyn chose to respect her decision.
After the phone call, Guadalupe went to bed. The bad mood made her tired.
When she was half asleep, she heard someone open the door.
“Who…” she turned over and opened her eyes partly.
Seeing Desmond standing at the bedside with his face covered with frost, she turned over again and lifted the blanket over his head.
Desmond sat on the bed and asked tentatively, “Have you been home all day?”
Guadalupe didn’t answer.
“I saw a woman on the golf course. His back looked like yours.”
Guadalupe opened her eyes in surprise.
She didn’t expect him to be also on the golf course.
But how did he have the nerve to ask her that? After all, he had let her listen to him and Belinda having sex.

Guadalupe wanted to tell him provocatively that she had been there. However, she didn’t want to cause trouble for Roselyn, so she chose to stay silent.
Desmond leaned in and lifted a corner of the blanket to look at her fair–skinned neck. There was nothing suspicious, so he
unknitted his brows.
However, he was still worried, so he asked, “Did you get out today or not?”
“No. I’ve been cleaning up the yard in the afternoon. I’m going to sleep. Don’t bother me.” Guadalupe felt disgusted to be near him, so she put the blanket back over her head.
Desmond didn’t think she was lying, so he stopped pestering
her.
Night fell.
Ezequiel was having dinner in his penthouse.
Miguel waited on the table, pouring the decanted wine into Ezequiel’s goblet. He was Ezequiel’s butler, driving, cooking, and doing many other things to take care of him in life. At times, Miguel also worked with Gilbert to handle some work stuff for Ezequiel.
“Is there anything from the headhunter?” Ezequiel sipped the wine and asked.
“Gilbert just sent me a shortlist to let you take a look when you are available,” Miguel answered.
Then, he seemed to think of something interesting and added, “I glanced at it. Ms. Melton, the girl I rear–ended, is

also on it.”
“I see.”
Ezequiel put down the goblet. “Go fetch my tablet.”

Miguel had been serving him for over 20 years. Thus, Miguel knew that Ezequiel was intrigued despite the casual tone.
Miguel went to get the tablet and handed it to Ezequiel.
Ezequiel opened the shortlist.
He received several shortlists before, but he was satisfied with none of the candidates.
He wanted a chief secretary who was good–looking, knew how to manage people, and had great interpersonal skills. Besides, he would need the secretary to deal with everything and the company’s staff and business partners for him.
“Mr. Hodge, Ms. Melton is capable despite her young age. She worked her way up to the Project Department’s director in 4 years. Zenith Group’s fast growth is mostly credited to her. Many people tried to poach her, but she refused every time, because Desmond, Zenith Group’s CEO, was her boyfriend. Rumor has it lately that Desmond is gonna marry the fourth child of the Graham family. That should be the reason why Ms. Melton resigned. What a silly girl…”
