Chapter 20 Why Are You Blushing?
With a loud noise, the door was kicked open.
The needle that was about to be jabbed into Guadalupe’s thigh stopped in midair.
The men were terrified, and all rushed to the door to escape. But before they could do so, the black–clad guards pinned them to the ground and dragged them out. They were shouting and crying, some even losing their bath towels and crawling around bare–bottomed on the ground, making for quite an eye–popping scene.
From entry to arrest and exit, the security team moved swiftly and decisively.
No one looked toward the bed.
A female housekeeping supervisor entered the room and covered Guadalupe’s body with some clothes right away. She untied her hands, quickly checked on her, and then left the
room.
Outside the door, Ezequiel said with a cold expression, “How’s she?”
The supervisor said, “Luckily, we came in time. She’s OK. But she’s terrified.”
Ezequiel entered the room, and it was quiet inside.
The woman on the bed huddled in his coat, her cascading hair disheveled, her cheeks pale, blood oozing from the corners of

her mouth, and her body trembling incessantly. At this moment, she was like a rose crushed in a blizzard, a beauty in utter ruin…
He bent down, his fingertips gently touching her cheek.
The next moment her delicate cheek was pressed against his fingertips, nestling in his palm.
He was surprised and paused there.
He tried to withdraw his hand, but her closed eyes slowly opened. She looked up at him, her gaze shifting from dazed and distant to mournful and imploring, like a fawn in the forest, wounded by the hunter and on the verge of death.
His heart stirred a little, and he put out his other hand and gently patted her head. “It’s OK now. No one is gonna hurt you anymore.”
Guadalupe suddenly began crying, her tears rolling like broken threads of beads into his palm.
“Just don’t cry…” Ezequiel had never been in such a situation before and wasn’t sure how to comfort her. The more he asked her to stop crying, the harder she cried.
Miguel also heard her crying from outside the door and fe.. deeply sorry for her.

The supervisor was there too. Miguel said to her, “If you to keep this hotel out of trouble, then don’t mention a word about what happened here tonight to anyone.”
She nodded immediately.

offend, and since the incident had occurred at their hotel, she was thankful that he hadn’t reproached them for it, let alone gossiping about it.
Ezequiel carried her out of the hotel through a private path.
Guadalupe was still sobbing on the way to the hospital.
She broke down completely, and her tears came in a tidal wave, soaking his shirt.
He was a bit helpless.
However, he could not leave her like that, so he made her sit on his lap and held her. She wept and nestled in his arms, her tears and snot all over his shirt.
She cried for more than half an hour and used up a whole box of tissue.
And finally, she was done crying.
After that, she leaned on his shoulder quietly with her eyes closed and was probably asleep.
As he took a U–turn, her face tilted forward and pressed against his neck. Her soft lips brushed past his Adam’s apple…
Ezequiel held his breath.
Without a change in expression, he pushed her head back to where it was.
At the hospital, Miguel said in a surprised tone, “Mr. Hodge, your face looks reddish. Do you feel hot?”
“Just shut up…”

Ezequiel glanced at him coldly.
Miguel was befuddled and wondered why he was mad.
They arrived at a private hospital. Since they called in advance, the nurses were waiting at the entrance. As soon as Ezequiel got out of the car, they took her in for a checkup.
***
It was midnight.
In the ward, Guadalupe woke up groggily.
She turned her head to the side and saw Ezequiel sitting by her bedside.
His shirt was wrinkled, his sleeves rolled up, and the top three buttons of his shirt were undone as if he had just returned from a marathon.
“Mr. Hodge,” she said. Her voice was hoarse and nasal.
“Do you remember anything from just now?” Ezequiel asked.
“Well… Yeah.”
Guadalupe pulled a wry smile.
From being attacked and then rescued by him, though in a state of confusion, she had not lost consciousness altogether.
“Thank you! I mean it. Thank you so much!” If it wasn’t for Ezequiel, she would probably be dead by now.
Ezequiel’s eyes darkened and fixed on her for a while. “There’s good news and bad news. Which one do you wanna hear?”

“Both.”

“Well, the good news is that they didn’t manage to assault you or jab you with drugs. You were only sedated and it won’t harm you. And about the bad news…” he paused, “your boyfriend sent those men.”
“I knew…”
Guadalupe lowered her eyes, her hands on the blanket clenching tightly.
Ezequiel didn’t comment on her relationship. “You were there somehow because of me, so I’m responsible for it too. My men have them locked up. Let me know if you wanna call the cops or settle privately.”
“You’ve already helped me enough.” Guadalupe looked up. “I’ll handle the rest.”
“Do you really not need my help?”
“I already owe you a big one. I can’t afford to owe you more.”
Ezequiel didn’t know what to say and chuckled softly.
At this time, the phone on the table rang.
It was Guadalupe’s phone.
He took the phone and passed it to her.
Guadalupe looked at the phone screen and it was a call from her dad.
It was almost 1 am, and she was still not home. Though she was a grown woman, her parents still got worried.

Guadalupe cleared her throat and picked up. “Dad.“”
“Guada, where are you?”
“I’m… I’m with some friends at the club.”

“Your mom is worried since you’re still not home yet, and she wouldn’t go to sleep. Just come home.”
“OK, I’ll be right back.”
Hanging up the phone, she felt bitter inside.
She dared not to imagine if something had happened to her tonight, how much her parents would suffer.
She turned to him and asked, “Can you take me home?”
After a few seconds of silence, he asked, “You mean looking like this? Aren’t you worried that your parents will notice something?”
Guadalupe said jokingly, “My mom can’t sleep if I don’t get back now. So I should…” As she said so, her eyes turned red again.
She took a deep breath, fighting back her tears. To cover the awkwardness, she said, “It’s strange. Why do I feel like crying again? This is so embarrassing.”
“Then, just do it. I’ve been watching you cry the whole night. It’s cool with me.”
Around 2 am, Ezequiel asked someone to drive Guadalupe home.

She put on some makeup and covered the marks on her wrists. When she got home, she acted as if she was tipsy. After a brief chat with her parents, she told them that she wanted to go to bed.
Since Guadalupe was home, her parents were not worried
anymore.
She returned to her room and washed her face. Then, she called Taniyah. “Tani, I don’t think Desmond and I can end this relationship in peace. He wants to ruin me.”
Taniyah was half–asleep and suddenly got sobered by her words.
