Chapter 18
Rain poured down in sheets, drenching everything in sight. In the middle of it all, a figure stood perfectly still, eyes locked on the mansion’s front door.
Inside the study, Sam finally set down his pen, rolling his stiff neck before glancing at the butler nearby.
“Is he still out there?
The butler nodded immediately.
Sam let out a cold, dry laugh. “Let him wait. No one opens that door.” He caught sight of another stack of paperwork on his desk and added, “He’s obviously got too much free time. Go find him something to do.“S
“Yes, sir,” the butler replied, closing the door as he left.”
Out on the staircase, a new maid peeked through the window at the man standing in the pouring rain, her face full of concern.
“With rain like that, he’s going to get sick, isn’t he?”
Beside her, the older housekeeper just rolled her eyes.
“Why do you care about a guy like that? Cheated on his wife, got his mistress pregnant, locked his wife up, and let that woman torment her. Disgusting.“”
She rattled off Alan’s crimes, her expression growing more and more sour.
The new maid’s sympathy vanished in a heartbeat. She spat toward the window. “Let him catch his death, then!”
The butler’s sharp voice cut through as he walked by. “What are you two whispering about? Get back to work!“}
The maids scattered.
Suddenly, the front door swung open. Someone stepped out, holding a large umbrella, and walked slowly toward the figure in the rain.
Alan’s eyes–dark and wet under his soaked hair–lit up with hope.
But as soon as the butler spoke, that hope disappeared.
“Mr. Clark, you should give up already,” the butler said, icy as ever.}
“No one in the Jefferson family wants to see you, and nobody’s about to tell you where Miss Emily went.”
“Young Master says, if you’re so bored, maybe you should head back to the office.“}
Alan’s jaw tightened. He was about to say something when a shrill ringtone cut through the rain.
The butler didn’t wait–he turned and closed the door behind him.
Alan stood there for a long moment, dripping and numb, before finally fishing his phone out of his pocket. The second he answered, Marie’s furious voice exploded in his ear.2
“You bitch! I’ll kill you!“2
Porcelain crashed and shattered in the background, mixed with Paul’s angry shouts and the screams of another woman.
In the chaos, someone else grabbed the phone, frantic. “Mr. Clark, something’s happened at the company!”
Alan forgot all about his soaked clothes. He jumped into the car and ordered the driver to speed to Clark Corporation.
The moment he stepped out of the executive elevator, he saw a crowd gathered outside the CEO’s office. “What’s going on here?“%
At the sound of his voice, everyone scattered.%
From behind the half–open door, shouting and crashing were still going on.
Alan pushed the door open just as a teacup flew past his head and smashed on the floor.”
Mane stood inside, face twisted with rage, hurling curses at two people across from her.
Paul was stone–faced, shielding his pregnant mistress behind him.
Alan’s assistant had already filled him in on the situation: Paul was sick of Marie, said she was old and past her prime, and Alan still had no kids. So Paul started sleeping with Alan’s secretary. It didn’t take long before the secretary got pregnant.”
Earlier that week, Marie was at the hospital visiting her grandson when she spotted Paul with the secretary coming out of an OB/GYN exam. Not believing her eyes, she followed them–right back here to the company. That’s when she snapped, stormed into the office, and started swinging.
As soon as Alan appeared, Paul finally lost his cool and shoved Marie out of the way.
“Enough! Stop this!”
Mane stumbled, but Atán caught her just in time. She whipped around, eyes blazing
You pushed me?! After everything I’ve done for this family, after being the perfect wife and mother all these years, you cheat on me?!?!
Alan was still in shock over his father’s affair, too stunned to react as the three of them tangled up in another round of shouting and shoving
In the chaos, Mane shoved the mistress hard, knocking her to the ground
A dark red stain spread beneath her I
The mistress’s face went ghost white. She screamed, “My baby!”
Paul froze, then his expression twisted into pure rage. He lunged at Marie, hand raised &
