Chapter 7
Lena didn’t think much of Alan’s sudden affection–she just let herself get swept away by the happiness of it all.
After all, any tenderness from him before had always been for the sake of their child. He’d never let her show off their relationship like this, not so openly.
Now that she was getting all his attention, people who used to look down on her started scrambling to get on her good side.
“Lena, with Mr. Turner treating you like a queen–and a baby on the way–you’re basically Mrs. Turner already!”
“Seriously, Lena, when you make it official, don’t forget about us, okay? We’re your girls!”
With her friends hyping her up, Lena grew a little bolder, sticking to Alan like glue every chance she got.
But with how clingy she’d become, she started noticing things she hadn’t before. Every night, after she fell asleep, Alan would drive out to the country house, only to come back early in the morning, looking cold and distant.
He’d always gone back to his family’s old estate before–not this place out in the sticks.
Curiosity got the better of her. One morning, she finally asked, “Alan, why do you go to the country house every night?”
Alan’s expression turned icy in an instant. “Don’t ask questions you don’t need to know the answer to.”N
To him, Lena was just the woman carrying Summer’s child–a means to an end. There was no reason for her to know more.
But women always know. The more Alan avoided the topic, the more suspicious Lena got.&
What else could drag him out there every single night, if not another woman?N
The idea that he might be keeping a mistress out there made Lena’s blood run hot.N
She’d fought hard to win Alan over–no one could underestimate her. Now, when she was finally about to become the envy of everyone as Mrs. Clark, someone wanted to take her place? Over her dead body.
She almost stormed out the door right then and there, but something made her pause.
Alan spoiled her, sure, but he had his boundaries. The one rule he’d never bend was that she wasn’t allowed anywhere he hadn’t invited her.
Her friends, though, couldn’t care less. “Lena, you’re basically Mrs. Clark already. What’s he gonna do–kick you out?”
With their encouragement, Lena mustered her courage, and together with her friends, made her way out to the country house in full force.
Inside, Summer was taking a nap when the noise outside woke her up.
“Alan comes here every night,” Lena said, her voice cold. “Today, I’m going to find out exactly what he’s hiding.”
At the gate, the security guard looked nervous. “Ms. Lena, Mr. Clark said no one’s allowed inside except for him.”
“Says who?” one of Lena’s friends shot back. “Do you even know who Lena is? If you keep her out, Mr. Clark will have your head!”
“Yeah! Are you blind or just stupid?” another friend chimed in.
Lena let out a cold laugh. Last time, at a party, someone had accidentally scratched her face, and Alan had ruined their entire family in revenge. There was no way a lowly security guard would dare stop her now–unless he had a death wish.
After a moment’s hesitation, the guard finally let them through.
As soon as the door opened, Lena’s breath caught in her throat. There, standing in front of her, was a woman who looked almost exactly like her.
She froze.
“Oh my god, Lena, she looks just like you!” one of her friends gasped.
“Are you kidding? She probably had surgery to look like you!” another scoffed.
“Im sure of it,” someone else agreed
Lena’s eyes narrowed. Before Summer could even say a word, Lena stepped forward and slapped her hard across the face.
