Chapter 13
Looking back now, Daphne must have uncovered the truth–that secret–and that’s why she let go so suddenly. When she said she was leaving, she never looked back, not even for a moment.
“How… how did I end up raising two heartless, ungrateful wretches like you?”
Felton was beside himself. He raised his cane to strike Nestor, but before he could bring it down, his breath caught in his chest. With a muffled groan, Felton’s face went slack, and he collapsed in a faint right there.
Panic shot through Nestor. He rushed to Felton’s side, propping him up and fumbling for his phone to call emergency services. Josephine rolled her eyes behind their backs, but then swept in with a look of concern, kneeling to help lift Felton. As they waited for the ambulance, she kept sneaking glances at Felton’s face, gauging his condition.
So… you really are Nestor?“%
Josephine’s voice trembled with uncertainty, though in her heart, she had already come to her own conclusion. She turned to Nestor shyly, her words barely above a whisper.
“Nestor, I don’t care who you are. I know–you’re my husband…“}
And Josephine truly didn’t care which man she was married to. Whether it was Nestor or Leonardo, it made little difference to her. As long as there was something to gain, as long as she was loved:
If Nestor was willing to take Leonardo’s place just to be with her, that proved he must have feelings for her too. In that case, a living Nestor was far more useful than a dead Leonardo.
She had anticipated every possible ending–except this one: being completely ignored by Nestor.
He didn’t so much as glance in her direction. When the ambulance arrived, he simply made sure Felton was lifted onto the stretcher and whisked away.
By now, Nestor’s mind was a tangle of confusion and regret. He had no time to dwell on whatever Josephine had said; his thoughts were consumed by a single, desperate urge–2
He had to find Daphne.
No matter where she’d gone, even if it meant searching every corner of the earth.
For so long, Nestor believed Josephine was the one he loved. He convinced himself that any feeling he had for Daphne was just a necessary pretense, a sacrifice for Josephine’s sake.
But after all this time–after pretending for so long–even he could no longer tell where the act ended and his true feelings began. Maybe it was just habit, or maybe, somewhere in all those days and nights together, he had truly fallen for her.
He used to be certain: Daphne was hopelessly in love with him. How could she ever leave? But now, she had proven otherwise/In this world, no one is truly indispensable.
Nestor couldn’t accept it. He wasn’t ready to let her go.
“Find out where Daphne went. If you can’t find her in Emberfall, search the whole country. If she’s not here, then look abroad. I refuse to believe she can just vanish into thin air.“2
Watching his grandfather being wheeled into surgery, Nestor pulled out his phone and made another call, his determination hardening with every word. Josephine’s schemes, in the end, came to nothing.%
The day after Felton was admitted to the hospital, two videos suddenly went viral online.
Both were silent, grainy surveillance footage. The first showed the cruise ship’s deck. Daphne and Josephine were talking–no way to know about what–when, out of nowhere, Josephine shoved Daphne violently over the railing. As they both tumbled into the water, the rescue crew arrived, but every single one of them swam straight for Josephine, ignoring Daphne.
The second video was at a cemetery. Josephine, waving a letter, looked smug and triumphant. Again, no sound–just Josephine, who, after raising her hand as if to strike, suddenly flung herself backward, feigning distress. The next moment, Nestor stormed onto the scene, his anger directed squarely at Daphne.
The footage exploded in popularity, sparking a storm of outrage–until it was abruptly suppressed, courtesy of the Sterling family.
The Sterlings soon made a public statement, throwing their full support behind Josephine. Before a crowd of reporters, they smeared Daphne’s name:
“Daphne has always been vicious, constantly bullying her sister. These videos are clearly doctored!”
But such blatant favontism fooled no one
Nestor, meanwhile, had already secured the unedited originals.
