“You never used to be this harsh,” Owen said, lis face twisted like he’d been stung
Serena yanked on his arm and muttered, “Know your place.”
I felt like I’d just heard the dumbest thing. “So what do you want me to say? Should I beg you to stay? Or tell you to get over someone who’s been cheating on you?”
Owen’s face soured as if he’d just bitten into something gross.
That was when I realized he had already found out he was infertile but kept claiming the baby was his just to shut everyone up.
Unbelievable.
“Watch your mouth, Paige,” Serena hissed, her face contorted in anger. “You still have feelings for my husband, don’t you? And now you’re trying to pit us against each other.”
A small crowd gathered around us, gossiping in whispers. Some were pointing at me, calling me a homewrecker, and accusing me of trying to break up the couple.
I shot Serena a cold, withering look. “What kind of wild delusions are you having? Why would I waste my time chasing after a guy who cheated on his wife with his cousin? He made his poor wife divorce him and walk away with nothing.
“Please, I was done with him ages ago. He’s all yours now. You two were basically made for each other–one being a jerk, the other a total bitch!”
The crowd went wild, their expressions shifting like they’d uncovered the biggest gossip of the year.
People started inching closer, and their whispers turned ugly. Now, they were criticizing how shameless and messed up those two were,
I turned and headed for the parking lot. I wasn’t about to stick around and make a bigger fool of myself.
