I turned and headed for the parking lot. I wasn’t about to stick around and make a bigger fool of myself.
Serena started yelling behind me, her voice sharp and screechy. Then, she turned her anger on Owen. By the time I pulled out of the parking lot, they were still yelling at each other right by the entrance.
More and more people gathered around, pointing and criticizing them.
Serena stood off to the side, crying and hurling insults, while Owen crouched on the ground, clutching his head with both hands.
I rolled down my window and called out, “Still here? Need a lift?”
Owen looked up, clearly stunned when he saw my car.

I slammed my foot on the gas, leaving him in a cloud of smoke. Oh, that felt so damn good.
The driver took me to the banquet at 6:00 pm.
I changed into a sleek evening gown and slipped on a pair of stilettos, stepping into the spotlight as Dad introduced me. “Let’s welcome Ellie Cromwell, the only daughter of the Cromwells, back home!”
I didn’t expect the banquet to be all about me.
The room was packed with elites from all walks of life, and the vibe was electric. Mom kept dragging me around, introducing me to guest after guest.
After the banquet, we headed to one of Cromwell Group’s flagship restaurants, The Black Oak, for a family dinner. The restaurant was members–only, and eating there didn’t come cheap.
Dad suggested we book the whole place for ourselves, but I turned him down. People were enjoying their meals in the private rooms, and asking them to leave would have been rude.
Halfway through dinner, I got up to use the restroom. Unfortunately, the restaurant was so big that I couldn’t remember which private room I was in.
I wandered around, taking turns here and there, but I still couldn’t find it. Eventually, I

As I rounded the corner, I accidentally bumped into a woman. I was about to apologize, but then I looked up and saw Mildred and Serena’s mother. I didn’t expect them to be having a meal here, either.
Mildred shot me a glare. “What are you doing here? Don’t tell me you’re still holding onto Owen and followed him all the way here. Listen, this place isn’t for people like you. If you’re here to cause trouble, I’ll call security to throw you out.”
The waitress stood a few steps ahead, waiting quietly. She probably thought the three of us were just catching up, so she didn’t interrupt or rush me.
“What, is Owen some kind of cash cow now?” I scoffed. “Do you actually think everyone’s going to be fighting over him? Maybe you should tell him to take a good look in the mirror.”
เ
Mildred was about to snap back, but I cut her off. “Owen didn’t even have to lift a finger, and you’re already well on your way to being a grandma. I bet you’d be grinning in your sleep over that, huh?”
“What are you talking about?” Mildred looked baffled.
Serena’s mother’s face went crimson with anger. “What kind of nonsense is this? Security!
