Chapter 3
I stood frozen at the doorway, my face as pale as a ghost.
A child… How could she be expecting Marques’s child?
I recalled the day I gave birth. Marques had kneeled beside the bed, his eyes reddened and his voice unsteady.
Honey, we are not going through this again. Do you know how scared I was just now?
“You’ve done so much for me.
“We’ll only have this one child. I promise you’ll never go through this again.”
Afterward, he secretly underwent a vasectomy without telling me.
But if he had a vasectomy, how could Kelly be pregnant with his child?
Before I could process the shock, Marques had already embraced Kelly, his voice filled with happiness.
“This child is a blessing. I’m so fortunate to have met you,
“Kelly, you’ve suffered so much because of me. From now on, I’ll repay you a hundred times over.
“If this child is a boy, he’ll be my heir.”
He gently kissed the back of Kelly’s hand.
Kelly snuggled into his embrace, her smile tender.

“It’s not a sacrifice. Being with you is all I need. I don’t desire anything
more.
“Plus, you’ve already made me Mrs. Cruz. I’m more than content to be your wife.”
Marques placed his hand softly on her stomach.
“Indeed, you are my lawful wife, my Mrs. Cruz.
Tears unknowingly streamed down my face as I leaned against the wall, struggling to maintain my balance.
If she were Marques’s wife, then what was I?
A neglected mistress?
I couldn’t bear to hear more. I wandered out of the hospital, feeling disoriented.
Marques, I no longer wanted your love or you.
The following day, Marques didn’t return. But his usual messages did. They remained detailed, thoughtful, and caring in every aspect.
“Maria mentioned you didn’t eat much this morning. Was the meal not to your liking?
“I’ll be back tomorrow. How about I make some delicious pumpkin soup for you then, okay?
“Is there any gift you’d like? I can have my assistant send it over first…”
I didn’t bother to finish reading. I simply turned off my phone.
I thought, “I can no longer distinguish between truth and lies, nor can I

discern his genuine emotions.
“But it doesn’t matter anymore.”
I brought the marriage certificate to the courthouse, and as anticipated, the staff member informed me.
“I’m sorry. This marriage certificate is no longer valid.
“You are not married at present.”
Even though I had anticipated this outcome, my heart still ached deeply.
With a hoarse voice, I asked, “Is he married now?”
The staff member paused for a moment before responding.
“Yes, this man is married. His spouse is Ms. Kelly Meade.”
Just as I thought…
I quietly picked up the marriage certificate and tossed it into the trash.
When the pain hits its highest point, tears don’t even come.
Three years of marriage, the joy I believed was real. It turned out to be nothing but an illusion.
Once I got back home, I began packing up my belongings,
I arranged for my childhood friend to take care of the baby and sent the child overseas.
There was still one final task for me to complete.
I needed Marques to sign away his custody rights to the baby.
