Chapter 19
Ruben said in a daze, his voice hoarse, “There’ll be a way.
“I’ll think of something. I’m sure there’ll be a way to find Grace.”
John sighed softly, “Forgive me for being blunt.
“Back then, the research process was leaked, which led to your parents‘ accident.
“The lack of secrecy gave the outlaws a chance.
“So, this time, I’m afraid no one can find them before the research ends.”
Ruben insisted, his tone flat, “I will think of something.”
John couldn’t help but remind him, “If you try to find Grace in a high–profile way, you may put her in danger.
“Mr. Parrish, don’t forget about your parents.
“If you really care about her… I suggest you respect her choice.”
Ruben’s lips quivered.
The snow in the middle of the night covered Bluewell with
snow.
It seemed to freeze him completely.
He stood in situ, finding it impossible to even move his

fingers.
Grace was gone.
He couldn’t even try to find her.

John turned back, went into the front yard, and closed the door.
Ruben was left alone in the vast snow.
No, wait; he wasn’t alone.
Turning around, he saw Mason standing under a tree behind him.
Their eyes met. Under the cold light of the streetlamp, they saw the same shattered hope surging within each other’s
eyes.
A scene suddenly started to replay in Ruben’s mind.
Many, many years ago, Bluewell had a big snow like this.
His parents died suddenly, and Grace, who was twelve years old back then, cried her eyes out in the snow; she almost couldn’t breathe.
He held her tightly, whispering in her ear, “As long as we’re alive, you always have a home.”
He…. broke his word.
He didn’t dare to go home.
And he had no idea where he should be.

Driving around aimlessly in the streets, he was still in a daze.
Until, somehow, he drove to the orphanage in the suburbs.
It suddenly occurred to him that ever since he picked Lacey up from the orphanage, he and Grace became estranged and started arguing.
If he could go back in time…
If he had never picked Lacey up, what would things be like today?
His mind was in turmoil.
Suddenly, by the moonlight and the streetlight, he saw someone standing outside the gate of the orphanage.
There were two figures, one big and one small.
The smaller one–though the light was dim–was pretty easy for him to recognize. It was Lacey.
He was so out of it that he drove toward them with his lights off.
Therefore, they didn’t notice his car.
He felt like there was an invisible force pulling at him.
He pulled over and walked toward them quietly.
In fact, he was close to them enough; maybe if one of them looked away, they’d see him in the dark.
But they were in a heated argument, and neither bothered to look away.

For the first time, Ruben heard Lacey, who was only eighteen years old, say in a fierce, almost murderous tone.
“Do you think they’ll believe you if you tell them I’m not the sweet Lacey they think?
“Why should I listen to you and come back when I’m better?
“They’ve raised me for four years. To them, I’m already their own sister. They no longer give a damn about Grace, OK?”
