Chapter 22
When was the last time I heard them call my name?
It had been so long that I no longer remembered.
My colleagues and seniors heard the voice, too, and they left.
Antonio patted my shoulder gently. “Grace, I’ll wait for you outside the door.”
I nodded.
Then I turned around and saw Mason and Ruben striding toward me eagerly.
They stopped when they were a few steps away from me, seemingly afraid to come closer.
I looked at them, remaining silent.
After quite a while, Ruben said, his voice hoarse, “How have you been these years?”
I said gently, “I’m fine.”
Though Mason tried to suppress it, the bitterness and regret in his eyes were still palpable.
“We know about Lacey.
“Grace… We’re sorry.”
I no longer felt a thing.

“It’s fine; it’s all in the past now,” I said calmly.
Ruben’s lips quivered. After a few seconds, he said tentatively, “Can we … have a meal together?”
I shook my head. “Maybe not.”
Their eyes, filled with hope, dimmed in a second.
No longer looking at them, I turned to leave.

Behind me, Ruben said, his voice cracking, “Sorry, Grace.”
I paused slightly.
Then I walked out without looking back.
Later, I went back to Bluewell and met with John.
After twelve years, his hair was all gray.
He told me about Ruben and Mason’s miserable lives these years, saying how remorseful they were.
Mason was devastated and ended up in the emergency room dozens of times for alcoholism.
Meanwhile, during Ruben’s years of grief, he participated in many medical experiments and studies at the college.
A succession of late nights and overwork caused his health to begin to deteriorate.
As for Lacey, they kicked her out of the family. She had been used to a carefree life and refused to go back to the orphanage no matter what.

Later on, she started to hang out with a bunch of punks. They took her on a motorcycle for a road race, and she ended up in a terrible accident.
She survived, but she broke a leg and had brain damage.
No one knew where she was now; she had become a retarded vagrant.
No one even knew whether she was still alive or not.
As I listened, I felt nothing.
At last, John sighed, “They knew they were wrong.
“They’ve spent all these years repenting.
“Grace, have you ever thought…”
I interrupted him gently, “No, I haven’t. For me, it’s all in the past now.”
I’d devote the rest of my life to medical research and development.
As for Ruben and Mason? I no longer hated them, but neither did I want to patch things up with them.
