Chapter 2
Katie’s grandfather had once given his life to save Nathan’s grandfather, Owen Morley. After Katie’s parents died in an accident, she was left in the care of her grandmother–just three years old at the time.
Owen stepped in, took young Katie into the Morley family, and even gave her the Morley name.
To the outside world, he claimed that Katie was his own granddaughter.
He didn’t just say it–he lived it. Over the years, he cherished Katie, shielding her from even the slightest hardship.
But three years ago, Owen fell ill. His health had wavered ever since- sometimes better, sometimes worse. Whether awake or asleep, though, Katie was always at the forefront of his mind.
So the moment the hospital room door opened, Owen immediately sensed that something was wrong with Katie.
He was about to ask her, but when he saw Emelia clinging tightly to Nathan’s side, he understood everything without a word.
Owen’s years of military service had earned the Morley family’s wealth and prestige. Within the Morley family, his word was law.
He fixed Nathan with a cold stare, and Nathan instinctively shielded Emelia behind him. “Grandpa, I’ve made up my mind. I’m marrying Emelia.”
Owen slammed his teacup down, shattering it. “You’re getting married- what about Katie?”

At his words, Nathan’s expression darkened further. “What–do I need her permission to get married now?”
His eyes narrowed, his gaze icy.
Meeting his stare, Katie lowered her eyes and spoke softly, respectfully, “Grandpa, Nathan waited for Emelia all these years. Now that she’s finally back, I’m truly happy for him.”
The room fell silent for a long time, broken only by the heavy rise and fall of Owen’s chest, his anger still simmering.
At last, he looked up at Nathan, his voice resolute. “The Halden family even changed their nationality–she’s not fit to marry into the Morley family.
“As for when you two can actually get married, well, that depends on how much longer I live.”
Emelia’s face went pale. Nathan wanted to argue, but Owen’s steely glare silenced him.
Nathan had always been respectful and dutiful, and he could see that Owen had drawn his final line in the sand. If he pushed any further, he might actually send Owen into a fit. So, he said nothing more, simply took Emelia’s hand and left.
Once the room was quiet again, Owen looked at Katie with deep concern. She knew he’d already seen through her feelings.
Everything Owen had just said was partly a test to gauge Nathan’s attitude toward Katie, and partly to see how determined he was about the marriage.
The outcome was clear as day.
Katie quietly cleaned up the shards of porcelain from the floor, then

poured a fresh cup of herbal tea and handed it to him. “Grandpa, I want to ask you for something.”
Owen’s heart ached for her. Hearing her request, he nodded eagerly. “You don’t just get one favor–ask for a hundred, and I’ll make sure every one of them happens, as long as it makes you happy.”
Katie’s eyes reddened, but her voice was steady. “Grandpa, I want to leave the Morley family–quietly, without anyone knowing.”
