Chapter 5
After a thorough examination, the doctor gave Zane careful instructions. “It’s crucial that the mother–to–be keeps her spirits up. Only then will she have a healthy, beautiful baby. Take good care of your wife.”
Zane turned and gave Katie a gentle, reassuring smile. “I promise, I will.”
As they left the hospital, Katie realized her hand was still tightly held in Zane’s. Embarrassed, she pulled away, her tone serious and sincere. “Zane, you don’t have to go this far for me. You’re the only son of the Renner family–Mr. and Mrs. Renner have so many hopes pinned on you. You shouldn’t just marry any woman on a whim.”
But Zane caught her hand again, holding it firmly in his palm and giving it a comforting squeeze. “I’ve already made all the arrangements. There’s only one thing I want to know–will you come with me?”
His gaze was steady, full of tenderness and conviction.
Katie couldn’t help but whisper, “But the baby…”
Zane gently placed a finger to her lips. “I know whose child it is. But I don’t care.
Katie couldn’t hold back anymore. Tears welled up in her eyes and spilled
down her cheeks.
Everyone knew she loved Nathan, knew how true her feelings were. So why was it that the one person who mattered most could trample her heart so easily?
Zane’s eyes were filled with pain for her. The girl who used to be so bright and innocent–how long had it been since he’d seen her, and

He made a silent vow to himself–from now on, he would treat her well. He would help her find her way back to the person she used to be.
Not far away, Nathan stood watching the two of them, locked in an embrace, and the sight was like a thorn in his side. His face was cold as
stone.
He called over his assistant. “Find out who the Renner family is doing business with right now. I don’t care what it takes–cut them off and bring those deals to me.”

The assistant hesitated after a quick search. “Mr. Morley, the Renner family is on the verge of bankruptcy. The companies they’re working with are all small–time, barely worth mentioning. Should I still-?”
Nathan smirked. “The once–mighty heir of the Renner Group, reduced to marrying for a lousy two million. How amusing.”
He watched Katie’s retreating figure, a twisted sense of satisfaction blooming in his chest. “Katie, you’ve lived your whole life as a pampered princess. Let’s see how you handle being poor.
“I’m actually looking forward to seeing you break down in tears, drowning in regret.”
He waved his hand dismissively. “Forget it. I’ve never been one to kick someone when they’re down.”
When Katie arrived home, she was surprised to find Emelia already moved into the Morley’s residence. But what truly caught her off guard was the diamond tiara perched on Emelia’s head.
It was the same one Nathan had flown all the way to Europe to buy for Katie on her 18th birthday–a promise that she would always be his little

Now, it was gleaming atop Emelia’s head, bold as day.
Katie’s expression darkened. “Touching someone else’s things without permission–don’t you think that’s awfully rude?”

Emelia laughed, covering her mouth with a hand. “Someone else’s things?
“Katie, just because Owen gave you his last name doesn’t mean you’re really part of the Morley family.
“And don’t forget—I’m about to marry Nathan. I’ll officially be Mrs. Morley, a true member of the family.
“So, you’re the one who doesn’t belong here.”
