Series 12
Grand Plains General Hospital was not only a premier institution in Owathe but also a nationally renowned hospital for its medical expertise, particularly in cardiac surgery.
Edith’s face immediately brightened. She turned to Wren and said, “I trust you! Please, assist my husband.”
“Okay, don’t worry,” Wren responded confidently. Without wasting time, she positioned the syringe at a precise location below Edward’s sternum and along his left rib margin, inserting the needle.
The room fell silent, all eyes riveted on her actions.
Just then, the Thomas family physician arrived, asking, “Where is the patient?”
“Shh!” The crowd quickly hushed him, signaling for quiet.
Momentarily surprised, the doctor soon understood what was happening and observed Wren’s procedure without uttering a word, holding his breath.
After a brief pause, a guest whispered to the doctor, “What exactly is she doing?”
The surrounding crowd leaned in, their curiosity piqued.
The family physician responded quietly, “She’s performing a pericardiocentesis. This man has fluid around his heart, and this procedure is intended to drain it to relieve his distress.”
“I see,” came a soft murmur in response.
As time seemed to freeze, all eyes remained focused on Wren. After a while, she finally removed the syringe from Edward.
A sense of relief washed over the crowd as color began to return to Edward’s face, though his breaths remained shallow.
Soon after, medical staff arrived and swiftly transported Edward to the hospital.
Joshua extended a hand to help Wren rise from her kneeling position.
After the intense concentration required for the procedure, Wren felt a slight numbness in her legs as she stood up.
“Wren!” a voice called out. Freddie Thomas approached with a warm smile.
Wren was a special nickname given to Wren by Freddie and his wife, Mollie Thomas, symbolizing their hope for Wren to embrace a new chapter in her life.
A guest asked with interest, “Mr. Thomas, is this extraordinary young woman your goddaughter?”
Freddie looked at Wren with a tender, affectionate smile before facing the guests and saying, “Indeed! She is the goddaughter of Mollie and me.”
A chorus of admiration followed. “How fortunate that Wren was here today!”
“She’s so young, yet she’s already about to join the prestigious Cardiac Surgery Division at Grand Plains General Hospital. She is truly exceptional!”
While compliments flowed freely towards her, Wren maintained her composure, unaffected by the praise.
Once the banquet formally began, Wren and Joshua led the opening dance.
Their movements, close and synchronized, appeared intimate to the audience. Everyone believed Wren and Joshua made a perfect couple.
Alexander, seated with his legs crossed and his hand absentmindedly tapping his thigh, observed them.
