Series 18
Jack, caught off guard, hadn’t expected Wren to have the courage to stop him.
As he opened his mouth to say something, Wren snatched the brassie from his grasp.
Before Jack could react, Wren slammed the brassie onto the floor, breaking it in half.
A sharp crack echoed in the silent room.
Wren threw the broken brassie to the floor, her expression stoic, yet the emotions inside her raged like a storm.
She had finally shattered the object of her fears. The brassie had haunted her for years. But now, it would no longer scare her anymore!
Silence enveloped the spacious living room momentarily.
Jack stared at the broken brassie on the floor, his mouth agape in astonishment.
After a moment, he turned his gaze to Wren, his eyes burning with disbelief and anger. “You’ve turned against your own family! How dare you do that?”
As he lifted his hand to strike Wren, a firm voice halted him.
“Stop!” The command echoed through the room.
Descending the staircase were two women.
Leading was Lily Wright, Jack’s wife, donned in a dark blue dress, her demeanor poised and her features refined. She was in her forties but looked younger than her age and beautiful.
Following her was a young woman in a white dress, exuding charm and innocence; this was Freya, the beloved daughter of Jack and Lily.
“Jack, you really should learn to control your anger,” Lily said with a soft voice.
Jack’s rage cooled slightly at her presence, but he tried to justify his actions. “Lily, you don’t understand. This girl, she deliberately stole—”
Lily interjected, her voice calm, “Let the past stay in the past. We still don’t truly know what happened back then. Wren is now Mrs. Clark. If she desired a necklace, she could simply purchase one—why would she need to steal? Even though she accidentally pushed Freya back then, Freya forgave her already. Why bring up these old grievances?”
Stunned into silence by Lily’s reasoned words, Jack found no words to counter.
Wren’s gaze on Lily was filled with complex emotions.
She knew that, logically, Lily should despise and loathe her. After all, she was Jack’s illegitimate daughter from an affair…
But Lily had never shown anything but kindness towards her, even when everyone else had turned against her.
Back then, Lily had been the only one who had believed Wren’s innocence regarding the missing necklace.
“Lily,” Wren said softly, greeting her.
Lily responded with a gentle nod, her eyes scanning Wren with a mix of concern and motherly affection. “Wren, how have you been these past three years? You’ve lost a great deal of weight.
